There he didn't know if his stuff made the cut: "maybe I'll hear it on the record", and now he knows it didn't: "I'm not on it, I know that". He seems to have become a tad bitter (i.e. Adele's change in description from "a very nice lady" to "a slippery little fish") in telling the story, likely for that reason—who wouldn't want their work on this album?
If anything, the fact that he knows for sure that he's not on is just evidence that the tracklist is or is being finalized as we speak
