ATRL INTERVIEWS SECTION...
Presents...
RIHINVENTION
After reading the interview, you can ask Rihinvention whatever you want!
1st part:
Know-to Know:
His name is Josh and he lives in Sydney, Australia. He's a 22 years old and works as a receptionist at one of Australia's largest gym franchises (Fitness 1st). He's also a college/Uni student. Josh has his final exam on November 20th, and then he will have graduated and have the ability to go out into the real world to get a proper job. His hobbies are training/weights, going to the beach, swimming, pop culture (obviously). He also wastes a lot of time on the internet (ATRL etc) and watching TV shows (Parks & Rec, South Park, Australian Big Brother, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad - basically anything and everything that's good). He tells me that he's OBSESSED with his family! Josh has 8(!) nieces and nephews (who are so much fun). He surprised me by saying that his 9th nephew is on the way because his sister was already into labour at the time we were making this interview!
LIFE:
A(lex): Oh, firstly, good luck with your exam. What exactly do you study?
R(ihinvention): My final exam is for one of my final subjects called 'New Product Marketing' - I'm studying a Bachelor of Business at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and I'm majoring in marketing and management
A: Omg I just noticed that you said that your sister is into labour nn. Omg, I don't know what do people say now..."good luck with giving birth to the baby" or something
R: Yeah I haven't spoken to her. She's in a lot of pain obviously
A: So, how many months-years do you work as a receptionist?
R: I started in October 2011, so 3 years.
A: By saying 'proper job' you mean something in marketing-management right
R: Yeah. I actually don't 100% know what I want to do just yet though. Maybe something in media/TV. I should probably start thinking about that considering I graduate in a little over a month...
A: Is it difficult to find a job in Australia in the management part?
R: Noooo, the Australian economy is really strong right now. And it's not about what you know. It's about who you know. All 3 of my siblings are older than me (37, 34 and 31) and they're all really successful and have great careers. So worst case scenario, i'll just ask them to hook me up with a job, or get them to ask around their networks. My sister works in TV, so I'm not too stressed
A: what do you love most about media/TV? It's a great workplace I guess
R: It looks fun and it's where my interests lie. One of the greatest pieces of advice I think you can ever hear is "enjoy your job and you'll never 'work' a day in your life." Just a few moments ago you asked me what my hobbies were and I said I really loved TV shows and pop culture. So why not turn that into what I want to do for a career
A: I absolutely agree with this. I mean, when you have a job and you love doing it, it's 10000x better than having a job you hate. Is being a receptionist a job you actually and deeply dislike?
R: No, I love it because I love the gym and I LOVE my friends. I would say "the people I work with" but they've become some of my closest friends...so it would be weird to call them "the people I work with." However I think it's important to note that I see it as a job. I don't see it as a career. It pays my phone bill and allows me to buy new clothes and go out clubbing. I get a few shifts a week on days that I don't have class. It's only $19.70 an hour (and $31 an hour on weekends) but all I have to do is stand there and swipe people's cards on their way in, and then smile/say goodbye when they leave. An d process their drinks if they want to buy a protein shake or something. It’s so easy. I just stand there on my phone the whole time hahaha.
A: What's your life mood right now? Happy, stressed? Are there any serious personal problems for you during this period
R: No I'm actually in a really good place right now. I get really motivated by summer. I love tanning (it's really bad, I know) but I love going to the beach and getting brown. So I've been going really hard at the gym lately. And the fact that graduation is on the horizon also makes me really excited. It's like a massive light at the end of a really long, dark tunnel. I don't know a life without study so I'm excited to start making proper money and to travel the world without my family.
A: Places would you like to visit?
R: I was in a really **** place at the end of August though. I went to a friend's 21st and got really, really drunk. And then I went out into the city and relapsed (I've had some struggles with drugs/alcohol in the past) and this time i really, REALLY ****ed up. I lost my phone and slept with someone I never would have gone for if I was sober. I felt so gross and disgusting. I still haven't got a replacement phone, but the past 6 weeks have been amazing with out a phone. It's nice and peaceful. Sort of like I needed a break from the world so that I could just reset or something. New York is my #1 but I'm planning on going to Circuit Festival in Barcelona next year (August 2015) so I'll probably do Europe before I get to see New York I've been to America, but only the west coast and mid-west.
A: Do your family-friends-workplace know your sexual orientation
R: Yeah everyone knows I'm gay
A: What's your come-up story?
R: Here it is http://atrl.net/forums/showthread.ph...01151#22201151
A: Do you face any discrimination?
R: Nope. Sydney's a gay capital of the world.
A: Have you ever thought that in case you move on to Europe or USA, the conditions for gay people will not be the same?
R: If I did move, it would be to another gay capital, like New York, London, L.A, etc. Somewhere where I could establish another network of gay friends, or even better, just set up new friends through my gay friends in Sydney who know gay guys in those cities (if that makes sense? haha
A: do you participate in any LGBT action, festivals etc?
R: Not really. I went to the Mardi Gras party in 2012 and 2013. But I was so ****ed up I don't really remember any of it. Oh and I usually go to the DNA Pool Party during Mardi Gras as well. It’s always fun.
A: You don't participate in LGBT actions much, right? Why's that?
R: I don't really care. I know that sounds horrible but I don't. I have no intention of ever getting married. And if I do, it won't be for another 10-15 years, and by then, gay marriage will be legal in Australia. The thing about gay marriage is, it doesn't affect me because I don't want to get married and I don't have any gay friends who are trying to get married and can't. That's why I don't understand why there are straight people who are against it because it doesn't affect them either because they're not gay. Like I support it, but I'm not willing to wake up early on a Saturday morning, go into the Sydney CBD and join the protestors in the streets (there's a protest like once every 3 months) - it's really selfish but I just don't care enough.
POP MUSIC-CURRENT
A: So, who do you stan for?
R: Katy Perry and Rihanna are my main two.Britney was my first (at 7 years old, I was obsessed with BOMT and then Sometimes, (You Drive Me) Crazy, Oops, Lucky, Slave, Toxic, My Prerogative, Gimme More, Piece of Me, etc.. I also love Ariana, Beyonce, Miley, Taylor Swift, Lorde.. .I like a lot of artists.
A: I have noticed that you're a 'closesed' fan of Katy and Rihanna, too...it's like you're fan of everyone, do you keep a balance between being a fan and being a stan?
R: I definitely stanned in my first few weeks/months of my ATRL membership. I would get baited and would get into fights and heated arguments over my faves. And now I'm just sort of like "this is the biggest joke...like...we're fighting over the fact that we have different personal favourite pop stars. So now I prefer to just go into The Lounge, Videos, Music News, etc.
A: Because when I was going to interview you, I was like 'wait, I don't actually know for who rihinvention stans for, what am I going to ask about his faves'? I mean, I actually LOVE this impression, being a 'quiet' fan.
R: Yeah, I think it gives more credibility to your opinions too. Like you see some threads that are like "Who is the worst at ____________?" and they'll just come in and go "Katy Perry " or "Britney Spears." and then they'll just leave without even justifying their opinions. That's really annoying. Like if you're going to critique an artist, at least give some criticism instead of just bashing them at every chance because you don't like them. And don't dislike someone just because you like a "rivaling" pop star more. That's so childish.
A: Why do you have Amanda Bynes in your sig? I mean is she kinda your fave, too?
R: Awh I love her I grew up watching The Amanda Show, Big Fat Liar, What A Girl Wants, She's The Man, etc. so I feel really bad for her. She's in my sig in a completely non-ironic way. I think she's amazing and I genuinely want her to seek help.
A: okay, let's talk about Rihanna first. Uh, how and when did you find her out, when and why did you stan for her. (All your answers in one post please )
R: I first found out about her in 2005 when Pon De Replay came out. There was this website called TheHotHits.com.au (I think? ) where you could stream the ARIA charts (Australia's Billboard Hot 100) and I saw it on there and got into it. So I downloaded it on Limewire. Then I saw the music video on MTV and I was obsessed with The Sims 2 at the time, so I downloaded her blue dress from the video and I've been stanning for her every since. And I stan for her because of her power to consistently reinvent her sound and her image, which is why my username is Rihinvention. Rihanna + Reinvention = Rihinvention. Every album has a different image/look and a different sound. And she does it successfully with each era as well, she's only 26 and she already has so many hit songs and she's still going. And at the heart of it, I think it just comes down to good music. I really, really love her songs. And that's the most important part of stanning.
A: favorite album and single by hers?
R: Oh god, that's hard Album would probably be Unpologetic. Single would be a tie between We Found Love and Only Girl. But my favourite single changes all the time, purely because she has so many
A: Your favourite moment as a Rihanna stan
R: i would say each album's release. Getting to hear the full album for the first time is always the best part.
A: Are you vveeerrryyyy excited about R8? What's your expectations?
R: Nah. I stopped being excited a while ago. It only sets you up for disappointment, and I think I'll be more excited if it catches me by surprise. So I try not the think about it. I just enjoy her current discography and he releases of girls who are releasing soon (Taylor, Charli, Nicki, etc) My expectations are deep house tracks. I would love a sound similar to what Kiesza's doing. But more than anything I would like her to return to some sort of visual cohesion. GGGB, Rated R and LOUD were all very visuall cohesive. Talk That Talk started off strong (with the 90s, English, grunge, skinhead, punk looks) and then ever since then she's sort of been all over the place. I would like her to go back to having a solid, consistent era.
A: Is there a main rival for your fave? Is there an ATRL fandom which tries to discredit her?
R: Yeah, Ciara stans, which is annoying considering I LOVE Ciara. Also BillionaireXBoy and that one Ellie Goulding stan whose always fighting EmRiNavy/Rider. I can't remember ha name. She got banned. Welp.
A: is there a rivalry with Beyhive? Because Bey-Rih aren't enemies or rivals at least, everybody knows that. But is there a problem between Navy and the Hive?
R: I'm a hybrid stan so I don't really buy into it or notice it as much as the others because I stan for Beyonce as well. A lot of it goes over my head.
A: Have you ever seen Rihanna live?
R: Yeah, I saw the Last Girl On Earth tour, which was really late to Australia. She had red hair and it was in March of 2011, so LOUD had already come out, and the LOUD tour started only a few weeks after it, but never came to Australia. And then I went to the Diamonds World Tour as well
A: KATY PERRY. How and when did you find her out, when and why did you stan for her. Favourite album, single.
R: I don't really remember how or when I found out about her. It's like I woke up one day in the middle of 2008 when I was in Year 11 and 'I Kissed A Girl' was literally EVERYWHERE. You couldn't turn on a radio without hearing it. I started stanning around 'California Gurls' when she started to prove herself as a major pop girl and not just a one-hit wonder. I stan for her because she just makes great pop music. It's 100% pop. It's catchy. You can sing along to it. Her music videos are highly-conceptual and a lot of fun. And the same thing with Rihanna, it changes all the time. So at the moment I would have to say my favourite album is PRISM and my favourite single is probably Teenage Dream....or Walking On Air... But it changes ALL the time hahaha.
A: What's your favourite era? OOTB, TD, PRISM?
R: Teenage Dream is legendary and record-breaking. I honestly think the 5 #1 singles (tying her with MJ) is the biggest receipt she has in her career, and it's a really impressive receipt at that
A: Just because you talked about 'biggest receipt' lemme ask about the superbowl. Did you actually believe the rumours that she was going to perform at the SB? How did you feel when you found out that it was true?
R: I was like "cool" and then I brainstormed ideas of what she might do, like inflatable tigers floating over the stadium (like they have at the Macy's parade) for 'Roar' and then a whole bunch of fans could come out and dance on the football field in bad 80s clothes for Last Friday Night, and then have a fireworks display for 'Firework'. and then like 10 minutes later I didn't care. It was great news, but I wasn't prepared to spend 4 days of my life fighting little monsters over it, like who cares.
A: do you recognise that it's a big step for her career? What would you like her to do next in her music career? What's the next step for Katy after PRISM?
R: Yeah it's a massive step for her career, but her career is already solidified. You only have to look at the success of her singles to know that. The GP love her and her songs. Stuff like a Superbowl performance and a Grammy is just icing on a cake. But a strong discography with hit after hit after hit after hit? That's the actual cake. i would like her to do what she's teased us with - a house-influenced dance record, and I think that's what she's going to do next. That Daft Punk, Disclosure, Kiesza sound is really popular right now. I want her to mix that with the early 90s house divas and serve an album full of nu-disco/deep house music. That’s my favourite genre In case you couldn’t tell haha.
A: do you see her winning a grammy in 2015?
R: Maybe, for Dark Horse. I think people discredit her for never having won one, but at the end of the day, she's still getting nominated. And it's like, how is that not an achievement in itself? If she's up against Adele for "best pop vocals" or something like that, then of course she's going to lose. But even if she received the least amount of votes by the academy (and placed 5th out of 5) how is getting nominated for a grammy and coming 5th not an achievement? Like I said, a Grammy would just be icing on the cake for her. But even if she wins or loses, I'll only care for like 2 minutes. I LOVE Rihanna and Katy, but I don't live vicariously though them.
A: how do you see her rivalry with Gaga and Taylor? Are the fans doing the most?
R: Yeah, as they always do. Honestly, I find it ironic how half the time we pit them against each other and buy into stan-wars, and then the other half of the time, we argue about feminism, and how girls can coexist in the industry, and we shouldn't pit them against each other just because they're women. It's like make up your mind. Which side are you on(->it was a rhetorical question )
A: Who is the #1 female and #1 male artist in the world right now?
R: Taylor Swift and Sam Smith
A: Are you here for new artists like Sam?
R: Yeah definitely. I think the industry needs more male soloists at the moment. And I think there's enough girls in the game now. It's getting too crowded.
A: what's your opinion about Ariana, Iggy, Charli, Tove Lo and all these new acts? Do you see any of these new acts (including Sam, Ariana, Iggy, Charli etc etc) dominating in the future?
R: I love all of them except for Iggy, who I don't think deserves a single second of her fame. I think she just became a rapper because she can't sing. She has no talent. I'm a huge fan of rap, and what she's doing isn't rap. Her look is amazing. So are her videos. But that thing that comes out of her mouth...the accent...I don't know wtf that is. I see Sam, Ariana and Charli having really great careers, but I don't see any of them dominating in the sense that they'll hold the entire industry. The pop industry has grown too big for that. I'm not sure if we'll see another Madonna or Britney Spears again - in the sense that one artist takes the world COMPLETELY by storm. I think all future artists are going to have to share the stage, to some extent.

2nd part:
A: This is good or bad according to you?
R: I think it's good. It makes it more competitive. I think if you'd asked me this same question 4 years ago when I was a Gaga stan, I would have said "Gaga is definitely the next Madonna" and would have expected her to be doing a lot better than she is now. I think more artists on the stage means everyone has to push themselves more to be the best they can be. "Friendly competition" if you will.
A: do you use any Nick-Didney gurl?
R: I LOVE Ariana, but I don't consider her a Nickelodeon girl because I didn't know about her until 'The Way' and I didn't what 'Victorius' and 'Sam & Cat' were until 'Problem' came out and I saw people talking about them on ATRL. I love Miley and Selena, too. Can't really get into Demi. Don't know why. She's beautiful and has an amazing voice. Just can't get into her.
A: Which album are you more excited about? Nicki's, Taylor's, Jessie J's(which is out I think)...?
R: I'm equally excited for Nicki's and Taylor's for completely different reasons. Taylor's because I love the late 80s synth-pop sound of 'Out Of The Woods' (they used a lot of that genre on 'The OC' and I loved it) and I'm excited for Nicki's because the sound of the album is completely unknown. I would love some straight up hip-hop (like High School) and some hardcore rap (like Beez In The Trap) though...but yeah, equally excited. And I'm super keen for Charli's new album too. I love her. And Kiesza's. And Fergie's. And Gwen's. And Hilary's.
ATRL
A: . How did you find it out? When and why did you enter ATRL?
R: I wanted to talk to other people online about R8 and Rihanna, so I joined RihannaDaily.com, which is a complete ghost town. There would be like 2 new comments a day. Not threads. Comments. So I googled and came across ATRL, but I couldn't join for ages because it's so hard to get in, and then one day in early April, registrations were opened and I joined And I joined for that reason, so I could discuss Rihanna with other Navy members, and I stayed for the community and other discussions about all the pop stars who captivate us, as well as other pop culture events and news topics
A: Are ATRL rules very strict to you? Have you ever get banned?
R: Yeah I got banned once like 2 weeks into my membership, and when I came back I had the biggest meltdown. I was like "THIS IS BULLCRAP. THERE ARE TEENS ON THIS SITE, WHO ARE BEING BULLIED, AND JUST WANT SOMEONE TO TALK TO, AND THEY JUST WANT TO DISCUSS POP STARS, AND YOU GO AND BANISH THEM FOR 30 DAYS BECAUSE THEY MADE A FAT JOKE ABOUT MARIAH CAREY. WHO CARES? IS THAT REALLY WORTH EXCLUDING SOMEONE OVER?!" except it was no joke like 7 pages long (it was in ATRL HQ) - it was pretty tragic. Now that I've been a member for 6 months, a lot of the rules make sense to me, but a lot of them are still a joke. For example, flamebait makes sense to me, because people fighting is annoying. But then on the other hand, the other day, I got a point for 'disruptive' because 2 people replied to my comment with my avatar (the black girl and white girl smirking at each other) so I replied to both of them with my avatar, of the girls smirking. And that got warned for disruptive, because the same little gif appeared on screen 4 times. Stuff like that is a joke. So some rules make sense, others seem to get made up on the spot just for the sake of it. Those are the ones that I don't like. The ones that aren't harming anyone.
A: Would you like to be a moderator one day? And If yes, would you try to make the rules less strict or just change some of them, the 'jokes' as you say.
R: No way. I waste enough time on ATRL as it is. I have a lot of respect for them. They do A LOT and pretty much all of it goes unnoticed by all of us. I don't think I could sacrifice an hour of my day to cleaning up a forum that I like to waste my free time on. Especially when there's no incentive to it. I have other things I should be focusing on.
A: Your favourite member and favourite mod?
R: Oh god...that's a tough one. ReginaPhalange and I get along really well and talk a lot in the Australian thread. I have a lot of favourite Navy members (MikeFenty, PhreshIn, buckingfastard, HumanitySector, etc.) who I used to talk to in the Navy Whatsapp group, but I lost my phone 6 weeks ago on my drunken escapade in the city (when I relapsed) and I haven't got a replacement smartphone (which is why I haven't spoken to you guys in ages, sorry!) but yeah I get along with most of the Aussie members in the Australian thread, Save My Life, TayLord, etc.....oh wait. My favourite members are definitely H-I-M and ks_dollar hahahaha, I can't believe i forgot them. Oh and Meowster always keeps it classy and has great opinions. Oh! And Pink stans. i love P!nkism and Can't_M!ss_This....and you of course ;-* And Saintlor and all the Katy stans. Come to think of it, it's a really nice little community we have. I wish we could all get along and bake a cake out of rainbows like we used to in middle school. Favourite mod would probably be Doc and Lipton...or is it Lippy....whichever the Navy mod is .
A: Thanks, and secondly, would you be here for a worldwide ATRL members meet up? Would you be here for the absolute MESS?
R: Yeah I actually would. It'd be so expensive though. Coordinating a global holiday at the same time just for a whole bunch of young gay boys who enjoy bitching about pop stars to meet irl
A: Nnn. how did you find this gif for your pic profile by the way? It is already iconic on the ATRL world.
R: Echelon posted in months ago in a thread and literally no one noticed it. I stole it and started using it everywhere, and then people started thinking it was mine So shout out to Echelon And then I found the series online and I made like 30 other gifs of the same two girls hahaha
A: "Worst Member Ever". Ironic or the truth ?
R: Truth. I change a lot. I think that's natural for people our age. I look back on the person who I used to be 6 months ago and think "ugh, who was I? What was I thinking? Why did I behave that way? Why did I dress like that?" and it's not just confined to my real life. I look back at my meltdown when I came back from being banned (and my old signature about excluding kids who just wanted to talk about pop stars) and think "wtf was wrong with you....you are the worst member ever." So yeah, there's a large element of truth to it. Also I rant A LOT. I can write so much...I am the worst.".
A: When you got banned, did you think about never come back to ATRL?
R: No, I always intended to come back. I was annoyed that I was banned because I really loved it my first two weeks there. And it was annoying being banned and seeing things happen but not being able to discuss them, like the Beyonce/Jay Z/Solange elevator incident. I got banned like the day before that happened, and then when I came back a month later, no one cared. Everyone was over it. It's stuff like that that sucks when you're banned. I feel sorry for anyone who gets banned when their fave is releasing. Doesn't really seem fair, just over like 10 (maximum) shady comments. But I suppose the longer you're a member, the more you learn the ropes, and I haven't been banned since, so it's all good.
A: Have you met any members irl?
R: Nah not yet. I wouldn't mind meeting some Australian members to go to a show though . I don’t have any of their numbers, but the other day I came across ks_dollar on grindr and sent him a picture of "woman eating cake" (http://i.imgur.com/2a4b9zy.jpg[/IMG ) and nothing else and my profile was completely empty. It had nothing on it. He was like "Who is this..."
A: How do you want the rest of the members to remember you in the future, in other worlds, what kind of impact would you like to have?
R: I don't think I'd want to be remembered at all. I would rather be forgotten. ATRL is a great way to waste time when you're bored, but it's not the be-all and end-all. It's just a place to come and discuss pop culture. People need to take it less seriously.
A: Do you have an expiration date on the site?
R: I don't think so. I find it weird that some of the younger users on this site think "oh when I'm 25-30, I definitely won't be here! I'll have an important career and a husband and kids and a really big house and I won't have time to discuss pop culture on an internet forum!" We're all interested in this sort of stuff. That interest isn't going to go away any time soon. I've been going on forums since I was like 11 or 12 (I think my first one was a Dragon Ball Z forum or something). The internet has changed the way we interact with each other, and strangers, with common interests. There's nothing wrong or "loserish" about going on forums. It's actually a great way to meet new people in the digital age, especially based on shared interests, whether it's pop culture or bodybuilding. However I'm sure if I do have an "expiration date" it will involve me slowly fading away due to my real life becoming too time-consuming and eventful. It won't be like "ok, it's my 27th birthday. I need to stop going on ATRL to discuss pop music with teenagers because that's just tragic."
