5. Bittersweet World by Ashlee Simpson
Billboard 200 Peak: #4 UK Albums Chart Peak: #57
Top 5 Tracks: 1. No Time For Tears
2. Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)
3. Never Dream Alone
4. Murder
5. Little Miss Obsessive (with Tom Higgenson) |
Ashlee Simpson has had a heck of a year. She's had ups in her personal life, and downs in her musical career. In her personal life, she has married Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz, and she gave birth to a baby boy, Bronx Mowgli Wentz. She has also changed her stage name to Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, not much of a name change, but it's something. Even though her personal life is at a high, her musical career hit a new low in early 2008. She released "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" as the first single from "Bittersweet World". "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" peaked outside the top 100 of the US Hot 100, peaking at #12 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100, the equivelant of #112 in the US charts. "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" which has been described by reveiwers as "a fun little romp", peaked at #1 on my personal chart in January '08. She then leaked a song named "Little Miss Obsessive" featuring Plain White T's lead Tom Higgenson. It was then announced that this was to be the second single. It was released to download, and proved to be a bigger hit, peaking at #96 in the US Hot 100 and #72 in the Canadian Hot 100. No video was ever made for the song, this was due to Ashlee being pregnant. She still managed to promote the album in the UK and Germany, performing on the Paul O'Grady Show and Loose Woman in the UK and the 2008 Bravo Super Show in Germany, this was all in May. Although, "Bittersweet World" was a commercial disaster, it still had tons and tons of amazing pop tracks, that would lure any non-Ashlee fans into buying it. Tracks like "Murder" showed a darker and different side to Ashlee's music. My favourite lyric from the album has to be, "I've got a Monkey on my back, he's helping me get it off." What the **** moment of the year? It's a shame how much of a flop this album was, but it is my favourite Ashlee work to date.

4. Santogold by Santogold
Billboard 200 Peak: #74 UK Album Chart Peak: #26
Top 5 Tracks: 1. Creator
2. Say Aha
3. LES Artistes
4. Starstuck
5. My Superman |
Santogold has quickly established herself as a sassy, hot to trot r&b diva. The American songwriter, producer and singer who hails from Pennsylvania, released her self-titled debut album April 29, 2008 to amazing reviews. The album scored a percentage of 77% at Metacritic. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 out of 5 stars rating, they also mentioned that "Santogold mixes dub, electronic and indie rock for one of the years most unique debuts", true words spoken by the almighty Rolling Stone. Her debut "LES Artistes" is a mix of alternative pop. Becoming quickly popular at UK radio, the single debuted and peaked at #27. The song was placed at #2 on Rolling Stones songs of the year. And Pitchfork Media ranked it at #4 on their
The 100 Best Tracks Of 2008. This proved to be a favourite with Alternative and Rock magazines and reviewers alike. Her style of music is something I never imagined listening to, but this album is a masterpiece that no one should push to the side.

3. Oracular Spectacular by Mgmt
Billboard 200 Peak: #60 UK Albums Chart Peak: #12
Top 5 Tracks: 1. Electric Feel
2. Weekend Wars
3. Time To Pretend
4. Kids
5. Of Moons, Birds & Monsters |
One of my favourite discoveries of the year, Mgmt. Mgmt are an American musical group based in Brooklyn, New York. "Oracular Spectacular" is their debut album. A band I've been following since I saw their debut performance of "Time To Pretend" on The Late Show with David Letterman. Mgmt who's style can only be described as "intertesting". When glimpsing at the back cover of "Oracular Spectacular", you can tell straight away that this band are far away from normal. As soon as you see a song title like "Of Moons, Birds & Monsters", you must think to yourself, are this band the usual indie band, no. Mgmt mix alternative rock with electronic punk. Or as I call them in brief conversations, Electro indie, and dance rock. A 21st Century visible version of Daft Punk if you like. Their video "Electric Feel" is so creative, I mean South Park used the aspect of the Woodland Critter blood orgy, but Mgmt use a whole different aspect, the Woodland Critter rock band, available for Weddings and Parties. Seriously, anyone who hasn't tried "Oracular Spectacular" or any of Mgmt's music, get on it now.

2. E=MC² by Mariah Carey
Billboard 200 Peak: #1 UK Albums Chart Peak: #3
Top 5 Tracks: 1. Migrate (with T-Pain)
2. Touch My Body
3. I'm That Chick
4. I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time (with T.I.)
5. Cruise Control (with Damian Marley) |
I know in 5 years time, this album will already be forgotten and plastered as a flop. Well, the cold hard truth is, that it kinda is. Only if you compare it with "The Emancipation Of Mimi" that is. Everyone expected high expectations from this album, after "The Emacipation Of Mimi's" huge Worldwide success. The album produced Mariah's 18th number one single. "Touch My Body" was released as the first single from the album. Mariah chose the single stating that she couldn't choose between an up-tempo song and a slow song, so she chose in-between...a mid-tempo song. I'm sure everyone will agree with me here saying that Mariah made the biggest mistake of her career in not releasing "Migrate (with T-Pain)", the song would have definitely got her some cool points. "Cruise Control" is another amazing song, using smooth reggae as the main theme. The album used a whole massive mix of different genres. One other high point of the album is the song "I'm That Chick". Mariah rolled us all the way back to 70's, in using a disco vibed song. Although the song used disco, let's not say it's anything like the Glitter album, please save your breath if you are.

1. Welcome To The Dollhouse by Danity Kane
Billboard 200 Peak: #1 UK Albums Chart Peak: N/R
Top 5 Tracks: 1. Damaged
2. Lights Out
3. Pretty Boy
4. Sucka 4 Love
5. Ecstacy (with Rick Ross) |
Well, just like Ashlee Simpson, this band have went through a rollercoaster of a year. They made the Guinness World Records for Girl Band for most consecutive #1 albums on the US Billboard 200, and they also got their second US top 10 hit with "Damaged". Apart from that, everything else went down hill from there. They lost two of their vital members, Aubrey O'Day and D.Woods. Also rumours went flying all year round that Shannon Bex has quit the band. Now people are speculating that this is just one big hoax planned by Diddy. Will Aubrey & D.Woods ever be let back in the group? Will they want to? It's just one of those, is it or isn't it questions? One things for sure, this is one of the slickest, sexiest r'n'b albums of the year. The girls have polished this down to a fine art, with so many amazing pop songs with amazing vocals and harmonies by all the girls. "Damaged" has not stopped playing on my iTunes Library this year. A record of 326 plays the girls have scored, making "Damaged" the most played song of 2008. If the girls are really over, then I'll always have "Danity Kane" and "Welcome To The Dollhouse" to remember for some amazing nostalgia.
