So happy. I wonder if the Academy will embrace or shun the film. I know Pike and some of the technical categories are shoo-ins. I really enjoyed the movie so I hope it does well.. it is kinda cold for their liking tho.

I don't see major Oscar wins for GG. Maybe Adapted Screenplay? Gillian is the person most deserving of a win. I don't want Pike to win and I don't think she will. It's nice that we get to witness a Fatal Attraction or Misery type movie for our times, but I don't think the role or performance were Oscar caliber. Glenn Close and Kathy Bates >>

Oh. I'm mainly just talking about nominations. I don't think it'll win anything (thought it had win worthy editing though) despite it all being top tier. Pike would only win if the GG and BAFTA went to her side and campaigned for an early lead.. but I don't see that happening just yet. As of now, it is still Moore's to lose. I really hope Witherspoon doesn't win again for her acting (or what is referred to as acting). I'd die. Would be worse than Swank being a two-time winner.

The book version of “Gone Girl" is a crime novel: an absorbing, ingenious thriller in which, halfway through, a big twist upends everything. (Spoiler alert: I plan to discuss that twist below.) Among the book’s many virtues is its concreteness. It’s not that the book is plausible, exactly, but that it’s full of texture and detail, both forensic and psychological. The events in the book make sense; the voices, thoughts, and actions of Nick and Amy seem like they could belong to real people.

None of that is true of David Fincher’s “Gone Girl.” Gillian Flynn may have written the screenplay, but the film is not interested in being convincing as a crime story. The movie crosses the thin line that divides genre fiction from postmodern fiction; it is decisively unreal, in the manner of “Fight Club”—a movie in which the actual and the symbolic occupied the same slice of reality. Its characters are ciphers, its setting is perfunctory, and its violence is stylized. “Gone Girl” is what the critic Ted Gioia calls a “postmodern mystery”: it lets us luxuriate in the “reassuring heritage” of the traditional mystery, which feels like it’s building toward a tidy solution, even while we enjoy “the fun of toppling it over and watching the pieces fall where they may.”

I enjoyed Fincher’s film on its own terms, in all its abstract, intellectual, postmodern glory.

Hm. I haven't started the book yet but I can agree with what they are saying. My thoughts on some of that and more:

It would have made more sense to leave the scene where Nick arrives home at the beginning and stop it when he enters the house. Cut to where you see the old neighbor across the street react to Nick yelling. Getting to see his reaction takes us out of wondering whether he did it or not (not to everyone tho - the film did manage to make me think he murdered his wife when the stupid pregnant neighbor revealed Amy was pregnant during the vigil).

I liked how the second half grew stronger and stronger on its satire. It really made me think. Ironically, it made me pissed at myself for believing Amy and the media's lies when there were so many small holes in her story. Sorta meta.

Seeing the movie the second time, I became much more interested in Amy and why she does the things she does. Who molded her this way? Her mother? I'm not sure she is the sociopath we are led to see her as. After all, she seemed to not fight back against her parents (mother?) twisting and manipulating her life for profit. She seemed content and willing to change herself for Nick at first. Aside from her killing Desi, she was not seen as violent. Why did she frame the first man for rape? It's just fascinating to me and I just want to understand fully.

What do you think Pike's Oscar clip will be? I'm thinking they'll want to avoid spoilers and use the scene where she and Affleck get into a fight. The way she emotes "an inspiration" is nod worthy alone. Or they could use the chilling scene where the detective starts to tear apart her story towards the end and she gives us a truly terrifying and menacing performance. Her best, however, would be the final scene where she tells Nick that she "is that ****" that he was in love with and wanted to be with. Powerful.

Ranted too long! Anyways, wanted to avoid being warned by Kworb for spoils.
