Last.fm used to have free streaming on certain tracks, then it restricted it to subscribers only which was a terrible idea. But seriously, they need to do something about the scrobbles if they want to do away with it all together, how will I find out what my most played artists/albums/songs are?
Eh , isn't that even Spotify doesn't make that much profit or none at all ?
The music industry is just really dying bit by bit. The formats of music we have nowadays will most likely be replaced by something else in future. I can already see artists just releasing singles and if the do well, they'd release them as a compilation or something
