Kelly told her label if they let her do the third album her way she would do the fourth album their way. So they gave her MD, created a big media mess over it, basically only gave her one single proper (Sober didn't get pushed in any kind of way), and let the album freefall. It was pretty much about control...if you look at her opening numbers, plus NA being a top 10 hit, it was clear to me that the album could have easily gone 2, maybe 3 times platinum if it had been properly promoted with the right three or four singles. But that would have given Kelly a bigger leg to stand on if she wanted to do her own thing in the future...it took me a while to get over it but I finally realized it wasn't anything personal against Kelly but just labels being greedy control freaks. It could have happened to any artist (and has).

The thing to understand about MD was that as great as it is (IMO), it was just one part of Kelly Clarkson the artist...she was going through some things, she had to get some **** off her chest. Call it a 'phase' if you would like...but clearly she needed to go through it on wax in order to move on, and I don't begrudge her that at all. It just ticked me off that so many other people did just because it wasn't what THEY were expecting or wanting from her.

Now I will admit upfront, I am crazy about Kelly and I got that info from two Kelly boards that I follow, so have your stan grains of salt handy...but I don't think she is selling out by going back to a Breakaway-style album. She's good at it (understatement!), and I'm sure she likes it as she co-wrote several songs on Breakaway, including three of the singles (Behind These Hazel Eyes, Because of You, and Walk Away). I also read on one of the Kelly boards that she did the A&R herself for this album and the label was extremely happy with the job she did. So if she picked out the songs herself I doubt she picked something that isn't her at all just for the sake of selling out.

As for Ciara, I think she will do well within her r&b box but I don't know if it will be a big crossover hit like Goodies or Get Up. Kelly has two advantages - the first being that people LOVED her Breakaway era, to the point that people just miss Kelly...even casual fans are now itching for some pop Kelly like Tyrone Biggums smelling a crack rock five miles away. Buzz is already starting to build up for the return of 'pop Kelly,'and people are anticipating. Not as many people are 'itching' like that for Ciara herself, mainly because it doesn't feel like she ever made that big of a departure. But there is always room on the charts for a stunner dance track...so if Never Ever is a hot upbeat song people will eat it up as well.

The second advantage Kelly has is no real competition in her niche anywhere near her fourth album era. The only artist with an album out now even somewhat close to Kelly's sound vocally is P!nk, but Funhouse is likely not like what Kelly is coming with. Kelly's new single is supposedly upbeat as well, but I'm sure it will not be comparable to an upbeat Ciara track. Kelly is pop-rock and Ciara is dance-r&b so I don't think one's success will affect the other in any sort of way. Ciara though has other r&b ladies to compete with. She has to compete with whatever single Bey releases from the Sasha Fierce side and has to check for whatever single Britney (and maybe even Lady Gaga) has out because if Brit has already filled the 'hot dance track' slot and Ciara's is anything less than a banger, Ciara may lose.

It's a shame about Go Girl really because it's a good song, they just half-assed the promo on it for some reason (they clearly weren't ready yet and should have just waited instead of trying to hurry things), and it shouldn't have been a lead single anyway, it would have been better suited as a third or fourth single. Kelly has a little room for error b/c of the advantages I just listed. Ciara does not have that wiggle room. I am rooting for Ciara, but she really has to get this **** right this time.
