I agree. It's already an even exchange. The talent performs for free in exchange for the broadcast's exposure. None of these artists actually need the Super Bowl to sell tour tickets, and the going rate that a lot of these artists can command for private performances or tour shows is a lot higher than it costs to produce their Super Bowl half time shows. The incentive to play the Super Bowl is taken away if the artist has to pay for the gig.

How much do they have to pay?

Considering all the free promo and the boost in sales, I don't know how it could come out to a net loss. Millionaire celebrities won't pay to perform on one of the most widely-telecast TV moments in the world and reap all the benefits that come with it? Interesting.

I don't necessarily think it's right to make them pay, but I can definitely see the reasoning behind it and why it makes sense.

I'm glad Katy is taking this attitude toward it, though. Even I would get second-hand embarrassment from the draggings she'd get on social media after her performance.

The artists should get free promo, if they are performing for free. The promo that the artists get also serves as promo for the Super Bowl, itself. Plus, the half time show always has a corporate sponsor, like the Pepsi half time show, or whatever. So, it's not like this is all one sided where the artist gets a sales boost, and the NFL gets nothing. The NFL is already making money off of them when they sell ad space for the half time show.
