Fergie's comeback single, though not surrounded by nearly as much hype as recent letdown Hilary Duff's, is still quite a disappointing and unsatisfying effort. Despite enlisting perennial rhythmic/urban hitmaker DJ Mustard, the track falls flat. It begins with Fergie singing, but overexaggerating words (Luuuuuuuun-don) and trying too hard to sound swaggy, if you will. Her fast singing/"rapping" is what the prechorus consists of, and it is both awkward and bland. The chorus consists of incredibly cheesy "la-la-la-la-la"'s which are interrupted by Fergie singing "[random city or country name] singing!" The post-chorus is passable, but the 2nd verse is laughable. The fake "uh" at the beginning of the verse sets the tone.
Trying too hard to have flow, Fergie raps about going to different places around the world before the listener is launched back into the horrible chorus. After the second chorus, there is a post-chorus and another chorus. It appears that a bridge was never even conceived. I'd have to say that this song is a major letdown, considering that the last few Black Eyed Peas singles were actually pretty good. In this song, the fusion of urban, hip-hop, and pop is supremely awkward. The chorus almost sounds like it should belong in a different song. Unfortunately, Fergie's braggadocio is not convincing, and neither is her comeback.

Just wrote my Lorde review, I think it's a little harsh because Im a big fan of her and an even bigger fan of the Hunger Games soundtracks (I own both soundtracks albums and listen them regularly). I think my expectations were too high for this but then again shouldn't we always have high expectations? Sorry Lorde, I still like you

Yellow Flicker Beat (sung by Lorde and produced by Paul Epworth) is the lead single of the third Hunger Games movies (Mockingjay Part 1) soundtrack. The first time I played the song, I said to myself that it would grow on me. That was the first red flag, in the past, I've loved all Lorde's songs from the get go. Now after a dozen of plays, it's still not slaying me. The best part for me is the instrumental when she sings the chorus. It's very powerful.
As a huge fan of The Hunger Games books, movies and soundtracks, this has me a little worried since Lorde is curating the entire soundtrack. The first two soundtracks were perfectly curated and their respective lead singles (Safe & Sound by Taylor Swift and Atlas by Coldplay) are masterpieces that I still listen to. I just hope Lorde brings a great variety of artists for me to discover when she unleashes the entire soundtrack.
Lorde is the perfect choice for this soundtrack but judging by Yellow Flicker Beat, I'm not sure if this soundtrack will compare to the previous two albums. I also think that the mood of the song doesn't match what Katniss is going through and is a departure from Safe & Sound and Atlas.
In short, Yellow Flicker Beat is just an average Lorde song by her standards and it really doesn't fit with the books and movies. However it's not so bad that I won't check out the rest of the soundtrack. I just hope that I won't be disappointed again.
Score: 3.5/10

Yellow Flicker Beat, the title song for the upcoming Hunger Games movie, is written and sung by Miss Lorde, two times Grammy winner and breakout-artist of 2013. The song starts off with an almost bjork-esque humming by Lorde which at first tends to be quite irritating but later on throughout the song proves to add that tiny-extra dimension to the song that creates all the dynamics needed for a great soundtrack. After the first rather calm verses, the beat kicks in and the chorus manifests itself as this big, empowering anthem that 100% fits what Miss Everdeen is going through. From the first chorus on, the tension within the song is undeniable and creates an otherworldy atmosphere which perfectly captures the riot and revolutionary spirit of the movie.
Although the song does not represent a new side of Lorde or shows her pushing the musical boundaries, the genius lyrics written by her clearly make up for that. The song perfectly fits the soundtrack, although its not something that radios are going to catch up. However, this shouldnt bother her too much, since the song is supposed to support the movie. Therefore, I rate this song with a
B

 | After more than 8 years since her debut album, the Black Eyed Peas chanteuse, Fergie, has released the lead single from her TBA album. Oh god, this song is just so cringeworthy. First of all, I have to criticize hard DJ Mustard's production which is 90% similar to the production that Tinashe's "2 On" has, song that was also produced by him. Next up, the lyrics are really cringy, they want to say something, but they don't say anything at all, it's just a mention of different places in the world, Fergie and Mustard thinking this is gonna fool the people. The beat is bland and Fergie's vocals are not stellar, being rather boring. Overall, I'm hoping for a better song next, but I've never been a huge Fergie fan, anyway. |

I think a new word may just have been coined!
chateuse (noun). A person who used to make good music, but now does not.

L.A. Love (La La)
Fergie's much anticipated comeback single is one which shows she can still foot it in the modern music scene. Many have criticsised the song as just another generic, DJ Mustard-standard beat, and I believe such criticisms are fair. However what I will say, is that it does show that Fergie is fully aware of the type of sound that is playing a significant role in defining pop music at this current stage in time. I'm encouraged by this, as while I'm not likely to say that L.A. Love (La La) is one of her greatest singles to date, it is at the very least an indication that musically, she is on the right track. This single has definitely done its job in increasing my level of anticipation for her upcoming album release, though not too much more than that.
