I feel bad for people who haven't realized the stereotypical cliches and will get spoiled since no one clearly cares anymore: Darth Vader being Luke Skywalker's father in Star Wars, Bruce Willis actually being dead in The Sixth Sense, Aeris dying midway through Final Fantasy VII, Louis being the Lance Bass of his era, etc.
I loved both Medium and Jennifer Love Hewitt's show, the two of them slayed ( and that black woman on Jennifer's show playing her best friend too was nice! )
That's not a bad idea though, has their ever been a show or movie where their WHOLE family was dead already and the main character didn't know it? Gruesome I can only think of ones with a single character or something.

I loved Ghost Whisperer It got a little corny or sappy at times, but the kind I like.

Wow watch The Leftovers do something like that
"The Leftovers are actually dead people and the departed are alive dealing with the loss!"
