Without sounding like some crazed Gaga/Britney stan, Ultraviolence actually is a very alternative record. It's not like it's filled with Max Martin and David Guetta type songs. Her sales are fine considering the circumstances.
Plus it's a complete departure from BTD. Which is what drew all of her fans in.
"Highest selling female album to come out this year" sounds great on paper, but look deeper into it. She's had almost no competition for that title as of yet this year - what other major females have released this year? Iggy Azalea? Shakira? Not much bragging rights there.
Not to mention the fact that there are female albums released in 2013 that have almost doubled UV's 2014 sales w/ their 2014 sales alone.

There's nothing crazy about you said. Ultraviolence is an alternative rock album. The fact that it debuted @ #1 and sold a great number says alot about Lana's impact in the industry.
People here keep placing it in a mainstream-pop headspace, which is kinda hilarious.
