Pitchfork is a joke, though. Not disputing whether or not Ariana Grande deserves that score since I haven't heard the entire album, but just based on other critics and people's reactions + the singles and promo songs, it seems that they are trying to get passed the criticism that they cater too much to hipster/alternative/underground music by given what they usually think is "bad" decent passing scores. For instance, I don't remember "Teenage Dream" or "Only Girl (In The World)" being ranked high on any year-end list by them, yet they ranked high on the "so far, decade" thing.
I don't know why people take them so seriously. But it's mainly an Internet forum thing, based on my observation.
This..I would be always scared reading their reviews. But here they are showering popgirls with praise. Talk about the new pop music aficionados Change of editors, I guess.

But they're giving undeserving rankings and rates. It doesn't even feel genuine, at least for their standards. But I don't really care for P4K's rankings and rates. Never really looked forward to reading a review by them outside a couple of reviews.
the Zedd-produced stomper “Break Free”, a colossal kiss-off that doubles as a “Stronger” for the EDM age. Grande’s side-step to the dancefloor feels pre-ordained, rather than a cash-out: “Break Free”’s festival-closing ambition perfectly pairs with her stadium-sized voice, and injects some much-needed femininity into EDM’s typical machismo.

What the ****
It deserves praise but they're not praising it for the right reasons. Poor idiots.
How? Beyonce actually released something that would tickle P4K's fancy.
Eh, Ariana injected all kinds of apparent hipster fodder in her album: collaborations with Cashmere Cat, Childish Gambino, The Weeknd, ASAP Ferg, etc. The only thing that really surprises me is the Break Free praise.

Well, you can take Donald out of that lineup since Pitchfork never liked anything he's done.
The difference between Ariana Grande and Beyonce is that one released a mostly pop album, the other made an urban-alternative album.

That only strengthens the case. He's inherently a very popular hipster act, just one P4K hates. They love using artists they like to bash artists they hate via collaborations (see Problem's review).
