No. I didn't know about Britney's tribute until a few minutes before it started. Beyonce's was overhyped because MTV knew they had no one else where as in 2011, it didn't need to be hyped because there were three queens of pop present.

There was a lot more happening that year than this year.

A) The promo MTV did for Britney's tribute was kinda huge. There was like a huge commercial she filmed and everything.

B) Lady Gaga hosted that year, so that was an instant ratings spike.

C) Beyoncé announced her pregnancy on the red carpet so that probably cause people to tune in last-minute.

Let me put it simple. MTV having 8.1 million viewers in their dullest show ever clearly shows how big starpower has Bey. Sans her, they were basically no big names, while Bey was still on the performers list on 2011 together with Gaga and many others. And in the 3 years the things change dramatically, are bigger factors which decide the viewership trend. But Bey saved the 2014 from a dramatic slump by her name alone. And again please Bey was performing in 2011 too.

2014 VMAs were boring as ****, and only Taylor Swift & Beyonce & Nicki Minaj were the performances being hyped for that the GP is aware of. You guys literally are all putting it on Beyonce when the award show was boring itself It had a corny host, boring performances. It was just messy. I didn't even know Britney won the award until I joined ATRL.

Nobody would even care about this year's VMAs flopping if the Hive didn't spend the last few weeks claiming Beyonce would top 12M views because she's the "biggest star in the world" lol

It was more hyped and a huge letdown. It only lasted 5 minutes, Britney wasn't capable of performing. Gaga overshadowed her speech, and all Britney really did was introduce Beyonce.
