It gives visual cohesion to the era. People will look back at the half-up/half-down high ponytail (without the combover) and say "that's from the My Everything era."
Sort of like Gaga having the blonde box-fringe/bangs during the 'The Fame' era. Or Rihanna having bright red hair during the LOUD era. She'll change it eventually. Just not until the next album.
It's smart IMO.
