Going pop isn't risky on a major level since Red already introduced it to her fans

RED also had an alternative aspect to it. State Of Grace, Holy Ground, Sad Beautiful Tragic, The Last Time, & The Lucky One. It wasn't all pop. Plus, you can add Begin Again, I Almost Do, Everything Has Changed into the folk category. All Too Well is a soft rock ballad. So, it wasn't really a "pop" album persay... She just heavily promoted the only 3 pure pop songs that was on RED.
And 1989 is a 80s pop album... It's not like she is just making a pop album. It's very different, and it's a huge risk. Taylor's whole career was based off of taking risk. Did you know that she started off as a songwriter at the age of 14?? They wouldn't let her write her own songs so she decided to leave the biggest music label in Nashville and team up with Scott Borchetta. Who, at the time didn't even have a record label!! Taylor was the first artist signed to Big Machine Records (an independent record label), and now it is the biggest label in Nashville. She decided herself to leave Sony because they wouldn't let her make her own music. Scott Borchetta did, and that is why she decided to be with BMR.
