Although I think revealing this cover as a "sudden change" was their plan all along... I mean, this photo leaked long before the unlock for the "first cover" began:
I vaguely am on board with that conspiracy theory. Though I think it's possible they did multiple photoshoots and decided they would toss out one and see how it went if it didn't go well, try another and see if it went over better. Like if the first had been beloved, I don't think they would have changed it.
I think it's interesting that the revealed new cover is formatted like the fan cover everyone said was better (and that Lauren even liked). I imagine they did lots of poses in hats and wonder if them arranged this way would have happened without the feedback of so many liking the fan cover.
