The point of starting the film in Asia is for Lucy to feel disoriented. She's studying abroad in Taiwan, however, she really doesn't know the place well. You can replace the Triads in the film with Yazuka, Italian mobs, hispanic gangs, etc. It's not meant to specifically be Asia, but rather somewhere utterly unfamiliar.

Fassbender is B list and obvious filler at every awards he's nominated at. He can attach himself to all those huge blockbusters and critically acclaimed movies but no one ever talks about him. Jackman and Lawrence were obviously the biggest stars of DOFP (hence why it grossed more than previous movie without HJ + it had older cast in it too) and everyone talked about Lupita performance in 12 YoS.

Michael Fassbender is A-list and more critically-acclaimed than Hugh Jackman with a shorter
career span than Hugh Jackman. Not to mention, Michael Fassbender has longevity, as
opposed to an it-girl fad like Jennifer Lawrence, who is already burning out.
