Aaliyah debuted at #2, so it was her highest debut to date. "We Need a Resolution" flopped (it was way too different to do anything major, so I'm not sure why "Rock The Boat," "More Than a Woman" or "Loose Rap" wasn't chosen first), so that really didn't do anything for sales. But it is true that her album saw a huge boost after she died, as expected of course.

First week sales weren't generally as big as they are now, if I recall correctly. Albums had more longevity.

WNAR is one of her best songs ever though and absolutely perfect. That >>>>> Loose Rap. I can see why they wanted to go with it.

She had no top 40 hit thus she was a flop. Her poor album sales didn't give her any justice either. Even after she died, till this day, the album sales are pretty mediocre.

This misconception that every week in 2001 was a 400k+ seller. If I remember correctly, she lost out to Alicia Keys, who "only" did 230k+ (but saw a similar amount second week), and she had a smash with "Fallin". There were plenty of weeks where the #1 and #2 albums didn't do huge numbers pre-"bad number days".

"We Need a Resolution" is amazing, but it was very odd for radio. "Loose Rap" was definitely a missed opportunity for obvious reasons.
