She was marketed as a hot blonde girl
( see just dance and poker face) but her label quickly realized that they couldn't photoshop her while doing promo or being in public, and the glasses she was constantly wearing weren't cutting it anymore so they decided to make her dress wierd in order to hide her ugliness. Every label wants a HOT good looking pop star, it's what usually sells. I remember back in the day people were unsure what gaga really looked like, if she was hot or not.

I feel like it's a fairly common observation. There is a lot more legitimate/transparent government corruption in that part of the world, and things tend to be attributed to large, shadowy operations, whereas a lot of the Western world will take media at face value.
