They've literally always pulled these number tricks. That's how they used to claim (and still do) that the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Elvis have sold over a billion records: they would convert album sales into single sales equivalents.
Really, it's not that complicated or serious though. Just decide which is the most important metric: the number of albums sold, the number of singles sold, the amount of records sold, or the amount of money made by the label.
