Have any of you ever made an album/mixtape? I'm currently in the middle of writing lyrics for a mixtape (which is more of a concept album) and would like to know what the process was like for the ones who have done this before. I'm buying the equipment between next week and the week after.
OMG this is genius. It reminds me of the anti-hipster song I wrote about a year ago
I literally had the chorus (the whole rude/fancy thing kicks in) came in instantly but I kept "why ya gotta (song reference)" like 5 times and I'm writing this and only the first why ya gotta flies out and the rest fixed itself.

I'm in the middle of recording an EP at the moment so I might be able to help. What questions do you have?
So here's the song I wrote yesterday. Once again I didn't have the patience to try to recording multiple times because my fingers really hurt from playing guitar all day so this is once again the first take and there are a few mistakes.
This is a kinda important song to me because I'm at the point where I've been dating my bf for about 5 months and I have to decide if he's really who I want to commit to long term. I'm also about to start my senior year in high school and I'm trying to decide whether to graduate early or not, what college to go to, what major to choose, where to live, etc. So I'm making a lot of decisions and this is about knowing which decision is the right one, even if its the harder path to take.
It also has a cool structure of verse/chorus/bridge/chorus but doesn't sacrifice song length even without a second verse/chorus
Two roads wander on beside my feet
Be happy and alone or love miserably
Can I stay forever in your toxic hold?
Would it just be easier being alone?
Everyone wants love to be complete
So why does love have to be agony?
So I stand here, forked road, looking ahead
I can't comprehend what would be best
If I could wake, happy, love in your eyes
Want to find a home for my heart to lie
I wish I could go back
Lock your heart in my hands
I want to make amends
But its time to move on now
Time to move on now
I wish I could go back
Lock your heart in my hands
I want to make amends
But its time to move on now
Time to move on now
I'll reach out now before I have to go
I'm still in love but I'm at a crossroads
I've got just one more thing to say to you
Did you ever care, was I just playing the fool
Two roads wander on beside my feet
Be happy and alone or love miserably
I wish I could go back
Lock your heart in my hands
I want to make amends
But its time to move on now
Time to move on now
I wish I could go back

Oh also if anyone listens to this can you tell me what genre you think this is? I have no idea and its bugging me

Well, if anything, it sounds like Alternative Rock or Folk-Rock… It's definitely in that genre. Like The Fray or The Script…
Oh, and it sounds beautiful. Forgot to add that prior editing. It made me well up inside…

This song is BEAUTIFUL! I loved pretty much every lyric. Genre wise, it sounds exactly like an early Coldplay song so definitely in the alternative realm. You have a really haunting voice too, I especially loved when you went into head voice in that bridge.

Since you're doing a concept album, it's best to establish the concept as thoroughly as possible so you don't end up recording more songs than you need to… Plus, you also want to establish early how your story or overall idea is going to play out throughout the album.
You should record/write up to thirty songs for the album so you have a healthy pool to choose from, pick out the strongest from that pool; if it's a lot, dig down deeper and decide which songs are the most important, and which songs might be considered filler.
You'll want an overall sound that resounds over the entire album… it can't be a random assortment of genres and styles because you'll confuse your audience. It also helps to establish your audience, like who you want to hear this album and who would like this album.
Then when you get down to a finished set of songs, the easiest part should be arranging them because you'll already have an idea of how you want the flow of your album to go. If you haven't already, try to come up with a fitting title. Try your best not to name it after one of your songs, but if you have to, it's fine…

Gurl, wow. This is amazing
To me, it sounds alternative country (like Kacey Musgraves)

Thank you all . I definitely thought it was some kind of alternative/folk rock with country influences but I didn't know what thats called so thanks for helping . And yeah I see the colplay comparisons and I like that
And thanks Adam for resurrecting from the grave for me. I definitely agree with what you said other than the point that this wasn't written to be a catchy pop song so I don't really care if it gets stuck in your head. And like I said I recorded this fast so the vocals definitely would've been more powerful fi I hadn't been singing all day already
So tonight, as usual, my insomniac little ass was up past 2 am. When that happens, my brain turns retarded. What happened between then and now? Well I channeled my inner Beyoncé, vines that & post it. Then I posted more stupid vines. And what comes out of this? A song I wrote, whilst nonetheless, jamming to Partition.
Another piece has come to me.
It was inspired by the bass in The Edge of Glory (courtesy of me blasting it).
There is a line, however, inspired from Work Bitch.
I'll eventually have to share it.
I wrote two more songs this week about the same guy, heartbreak's a bitch etc.
Fade Away
I tried being your friend
But it’s so damn hard for me now
I can’t keep ignoring it
The pain’s getting to me now
My heart is breaking bad
Emotional whiplash in my head
I want you but I don’t want you around
And you’ll be leaving soon
I can’t be stuck here missing you
So I’m willing to let it all die down
I can’t just stay here chasing your love down
There’s just no sense in dreaming you with me now
You’ve made it very clear
I tried but things cannot be the same
I can’t stand here watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
I can’t let myself need your love
I’m going to make sure I rise above
I’m washing the pain today
I can’t let you get me down another day
Sometimes I’m so confused
Because I feel the love coming from you
And I don’t know what to do
But I’m done cracking over you
I can’t just stay here chasing your love down
There’s just no sense in dreaming you with me now
You’ve made it very clear
I tried but things cannot be the same
I can’t stand here watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
I won’t watch my heart break twice in the same day
I won’t keep longing for love that won’t stay
I can’t stop shedding tears over you
But once I figure it out
I promise I’ll be done real soon
I can’t just stay here chasing your love down
There’s just no sense in dreaming you with me now
You’ve made it very clear
I tried but things cannot be the same
I can’t stand here watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Things cannot be the same
I can’t stand here watching you fade away
Dreaming that you belong with me
Wishing you were so in love with me
:
I can’t just stay here chasing your love down
There’s just no sense in dreaming you with me now
You’ve made it very clear
I tried but things cannot be the same
I can’t stand here watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Can’t stay here watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Watching you fade away
Brokenhearted
I got it wrong
It’s like I can’t breathe when you’re not here
Trying to be strong
One look at you, I want to disappear
My heart was guarded
I don’t know why I let you creep in
If you’re the ocean, I’m the boat in it that’s sinking
I don’t know what to say
I’m drifting away
Perpetually sad without your love
I never knew that I could feel so brokenhearted
When Cupid shot his arrow at me
He must’ve got me bad
And I wish you didn’t give me so much sadness
You were the reason that I smiled
Now I can’t smile any more
And I won’t be the same
I’m freaking out
I try to cut you out of my heart
It hurts too much
This lack of love is tearing me apart
I miss you lots
No person ever made me so sad
But I won’t talk
The only safe place is in my head
And this love has consumed me
I don’t know what it’s done to me
I hate being this way
I never knew that I could feel so brokenhearted
When Cupid shot his arrow at me
He must’ve got me bad
And I wish you didn’t give me so much sadness
You were the reason that I smiled
Now I can’t smile any more
And I won’t be the same
The seasons change, my heart stays the same
I can’t seem to fall out of love with you
I can’t go numb, I feel too much
You stirred up something strange deep down within me
And I won’t be the same
I can’t fix my heart
I never knew that I could feel so brokenhearted
When Cupid shot his arrow at me
He must’ve got me bad
And I wish you didn’t give me so much sadness
You were the reason that I smiled
Now I can’t smile any more
And I won’t be the same
No, I won’t be the same
I never knew that I could feel so brokenhearted
When Cupid shot his arrow at me
He must’ve got me bad
And I wish you didn’t give me so much sadness
You were the reason that I smiled
Now I can’t smile any more
And I won’t be the same
No, I won’t be the same
And I won’t let myself fall so hard in love again
I won’t be the same
I never knew that I could be so brokenhearted
I won’t be the same
I feel like I write my best songs when I'm really tired because then it's easier for me to access my emotions.
I want to record an EP, but I have such a hard time finding instrumentals that go along with my lyrics bc I'm not good at the guitar and can't produce. Does anyone know of any producing programs that are easy to use and free

GarageBand is super easy and free if you have a Mac, although it has more limits than others do. Id recommend just looking up tracks to write over, I've never done it myself but I plan to since I almost always write with my guitar.
TBH, it's really hard to produce anything to a song you haven't heard before… I mean, lyrics are one thing, but without a key or a tempo or a melody, I'm working in the dark most of the time…

I have GarageBand, but it's trash for making beats I think
I usually just use beats from YouTube that aren't tagged tbh
I produce and sometimes write because I always want to make a song but some of the songs I write are kinda bad (lyrics wise) so I stick to making music mainly.
