There are many people who can backup her claims as a REAL struggling artist. Obviously $35 was worth more back then than it is now, and even then, she didn't just land in NYC with $35 and a dream to become famous. She wanted to dance first and foremost. She fell into singing after she realized that she would always live hand-to-mouth trying to pursue dance, so she started to audition for shows that required singing and dancing.

There are plenty of people on the record that attest to Madonna's story. She was middle class in Michigan but she was on her own in NYC trying to make it big. She didn't have her daddy paying for her apartments, her blow and actively trying to get her record deals.
