You can interpret it as GU suggested, as in She is running from the relationship. Or, as someone else in this base once suggested, you can interpret it as saying that She was there watching him run scared from the relationship. Both are plausible, although I think the latter makes more sense considering the song (and She probably wouldn't say "I was there, running away scared," so I think "I was there watching him run away" makes more sense).


The latter would be reminiscent of "made you run and hide like a scared little boy" from Forever & Always.

It's the turning point of the whole song, right after that is "you call me up again just to break me like a promise. So casually cruel in the name of being honest.", look at the whole song, it DOES look like a photo album on the counter, different feelings in one song from the beginning to the end. It's hard to top this masterpiece.

Even our different interpretations reveal "Maybe we got lost in translation", don't get me wrong, I wrote it in a good way. Just because of different understanding, we can directly understand the misunderstanding ("lost in translation") which was the reason of the turning point of their relationship. Perfect structure of a masterpiece.

I agree. One of the true marks of a great songwriter is being able to use one word or phrase to mean multiple things.

I feel most people take Her lyrics at face value and are most likely oblivious to the metaphors and innuendos that are present in 90% of Her songs.
