I don't have a response to the rest of your post, but I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is "overexposure." A song that's only "meh" to me on first listen can become downright excruciating to listen to after the 5,000th play on the radio.

It's not really the song's fault, of course, but that doesn't really change the fact that I can't stand listening to Maroon 5's One More Night anymore without having an aneurysm.
