Are they mad at the fact that when normal people think of her today (and they don't) they think of a *****, lip syncing joke who shaved her head, was taken to a mental hospital tied on stretchers and had her kids taken away from her?
And since they love making fun of tributes, Deadney's latest tribute (which ended up being BeyGOD tribute remember????) looked like this.

The funny thing is that 30+ pages later, the hive and army are still going at it over who deserves the award.
In the real world, this was a business decision by MTV who does not care about how many "iconic" videos the recipient has, but what potential viewership they can bring in. The Vanguard Award lost its meaning in the 90s. The award for Britney was a business deal, promo for Britney and Femme Fatale in exchange for an appearance guaranteed to bring in viewers. The award for Justin was a business deal, promo for Justin and 20/20 in exchange for an appearance guaranteed to bring in viewers. Now in 2014, nothing has changed. MTV fought for Beyonce not because they really thought she really, really deserved this award and they wanted to give it to her out of the kindness of their hearts, but because she's who everyone wants to see right now. They negotiated a business deal in which Bey will perform and receive the award. The award for Beyonce is a business deal, promo for Bey and BEYONCE in exchange for an appearance guaranteed to bring in viewers.
MTV don't care. They want $$$$.
