Is anyone else HOLLERING at the fact that Katy in one look managed to represent ARTPOP more completely than Gaga did in an entire era? OMG.
But Gaga did it well too?

the whole Robert Wilson collab at the Louvre.
Anyway, I posted my thoughts about Katy's "mature" image and the singles from this album on my tumblr:
Quote:
"Roar" was good cuz even tho the video was kinda childish, the song’s self empowerment theme + slight stadium sound was more mature than Teenage Dream.
"Unconditionally" was great and mature but it was kinda boring so it didn’t do as well (not that the video + “Dark Horse” overshadowing it helped either…)
"Dark Horse" was great bc it was new territory for her musically and it was mature in a whole different way (the sensuality in the song). Not to mention it’s catchy af so it’s no surprise it did amazingly.
"Birthday" is a really catchy song and all, and probably would’ve done better if it was released after "Unconditionally" (and not overshadowed by "Dark Horse") but imo it’s bland in a way. It’s very reminiscent of the songs from Teenage Dream. If it was more layered with disco/funk elements (like “Treasure” by Bruno Mars) and had more mature but sexy lyrics (think “Blow” by Beyoncé or “Candyman” by Christina), it would’ve been more acclaimed and successful imo.
Now with “This Is How We Do”, I’m hoping it’ll do well for the sake of the era, but it’s definitely not the “mature” Katy that she seemingly promised + the public wants. It sounds like she tried to make a hip solo Gwen Stefani-esque song, but the song kinda fails to have the same effortless cool Cali girl thing Gwen serves. Maybe the song will kinda go viral, but honestly that’s it’s biggest hope. :/
