You can say things like "I woke up like dis", "We be all NIGH" and "Who run the world? Girls!" in the middle of a big room and everyone will know who and what you're quoting. Say something like "one second i'm a koons and suddenly the koons is me" and everyone will think you belong in an asylum.
And if they don't know, you won't feel awkward (and potentially lose them as friends) when referring them to the source material.
I can't say the same is true for the Applause vidya.
That mindset completely diminishes any standard. There is context involved and if you're not familiar with the genre, don't compare the 3 songs you know and say which one is the best jazz.
