LOL I just find this one so unremarkable and judging by the abundance of 6's and 7's it pulled in, so did many of our voters. Big Boi's "something's gotta giiiiive! ;)" intro is a little wacky; elsewhere Andre drops some truth bombs regarding record labels and people hustling or doing 'bad' things out in the world... both verses are pretty dry as a whole. There's some nice turntabling in the background though, and FUN FACT I just now learned: that hook comes to us courtesy of our old friend Witchdoctor from "Mamacita."
Choice lyrical nugget: "Like Tri-City high school, was pulling em in a broke down Rabbit / I spit a couple of words and laying em down was just a habit / Just like Smokey, choking off da pee-wee that we rolled up / Talking about the clique will get you laid down hella swoled up"
Omg did I link in the OP to an instrumental?
I hope everyone noticed that it specified in the video title and figured to seek out the original to rate.
There is rapping in this song.
It's all good, this is a fair placement for Ova da Wudz.
Something a little LONGER, harder-edged and more substantial than both the tracks we've seen go and many of the ones that surround it on Southernplayalistic, "Call of da Wild" is a look at mounting pressure in select urban communities for young men to leave school and turn to the streets -- all over a PRETTY bangin beat. Andre stays the most on topic with a great introductory verse while Big tells of his endeavors committing crimes and two other Dungeon Family members do their thing in between. The thing is while Khujo Goodie would improve with time, I have never found T-Mo to be that good of a rapper, so he can take some of the blame for this track falling comparitively flat in the eyes of many. The song is strung together with a one-line hook from soulful crooner Cee-Lo, and while there are later-day OutKast joints on which he does GREAT work, here I feel the refrain can grow to grate almost as much as that of "Mamacita."
Choice lyrical nugget: "I'll be coming around the ghetto when I come kicking one for the treble / Y'all can't stoop to my level, I'm like the devil or whatever"
Stankonia becomes the first album in our countdown to lose a second track, as this enigma ties out with "Call of da Wild." Just Andre here (this rarely happens), frantically asking the QUESTIONS for which there may be no answers -- at least for the first 45 seconds, before his soul-searching gives way to rhythmic beeping. I wouldn't call it great, but it shows the group at their most outside-the-box, and even if you don't like it, it's all over as quickly as it started. It was sorely missed on my first illegally downloaded copy of Stankonia that only ran 23 tracks.
Choice lyrical nugget: "What can make a ***** wanna fight a whole night club? / Figure that he ought to maybe be a pimp simply cause he DON'T LIKE LOVE"
