 That's all based on assumptions that a new album wouldn't appear for another 2-3 years (which imo is highly unlikely since she's #1 in pop right now she's not one to NOT keep the momentum going).
So because Birthday underperformed she should have ended the era with no more singles (despite touring until the very latest March 2015 and with the album selling very steadily)? Not picking a fight, but top 10 on pop radio and a top 20 hit isn't really that big of an underperformance IMO. For her, sure, I guess? It's still a great feat for the song despite it's lack of digital sales.
