That market already seems to be saturated by young soloists like Justin Bieber, with emerging up-and-comers like Austin Mahone and Cody Simpson.
I saw the 1D movie and the whole "we're the anti-boy band" thing seems to be their shtick. But if you just have one singer and take away the other four, a guy on stage going "lol I can't really dance" *air-humps* isn't really pop star material.
That being said, the built-in fan base would be huge. But, that same fan base would probably also cry for weeks on end when they break up. It's best to delay it as long as possible imo.
