I wonder who will attempt a solo career. Part of me wants Zayn but I feel like he isn't into all the fame. I think Niall, Liam, and Harry will try though

Harry and Zayn could easily have solo careers. I don't think Zayn will aggressively pursue one though.

The disbandment of mega-bands that have come before them, like The Spice Girls and The Backstreet Boys, should show them that the money is in staying together.

And it's not like there's a Justin Timberlake or a Beyonce in the group who's a break-out star who could become a soloist. Or is there? I've never actually listened to any of their songs so I probably shouldn't judge. But I don't think there is.

None of them are spectacular singers, so despite wishful thinking and delusion from their fans, I doubt any of them will be able to pursue successful solo careers. They're basically a bunch of pretty faces with a team behind them that know how to pander to their fanbase. See: Little Things

Zayn and Liam are easily more capable singers than someone like Katy or Rihanna. If extraordinary singing talent were the main prerequisite for a successful career, the pop music industry would be much different.

With a good musical transition like JT made after NSYNC, at least one of them could have a solid solo career.

That market already seems to be saturated by young soloists like Justin Bieber, with emerging up-and-comers like Austin Mahone and Cody Simpson.

I saw the 1D movie and the whole "we're the anti-boy band" thing seems to be their shtick. But if you just have one singer and take away the other four, a guy on stage going "lol I can't really dance" *air-humps* isn't really pop star material.

That being said, the built-in fan base would be huge. But, that same fan base would probably also cry for weeks on end when they break up. It's best to delay it as long as possible imo.

Katy and Rihanna didn't start off in girl bands though, did they? They crafted their own images and brands as individual artists.

You need to be a pretty damn good singer (which IMO, none of 1D are) in order to break from the manufactured boy-band brand and actually establish yourself as an artist. Hell, where's Joe Jonas' musical career?

Exactly. Even their videos like Best Song Ever which depict them as rebellious are planned and approved by a team. They're literally a walking paradox. They're the definition of a manufactured boyband while claiming to be the anti-boyband. The real talent lies in their marketing team who have managed to convince young girls and boys who know no better than One Direction are unique and "set apart" from the others.
