Why is Gardevoir being brought up as a possible newcomer?
Seems random to me.
Sakurai revealed that every Pokemon from the Charizard/Greninja reveal trailer would be included in the game. Gardevoir has yet to show up as a usable Pokemon and she is a big character from Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire and she has a Mega-Evolution. I am totally here for her, though she is not a character I personally expect.

Returning characters expected to be announced include: Jigglypuff, Ness, Ice Climbers, Ganondorf, Falco, etc.
Rumored cut characters include: Lucas, Snake, Meta Knight, etc.
I'm sure I missed a ton of characters. Sakurai announced that we're getting to the bottom of the heap of new characters.
Chorus Men and Shulk are basically the only legible rumors, but ever since gametsu got Chrom wrong people are less concerned. Gardevoir is not rumored just speculated, same with Ghirahim, Ridley and King K Rool.

Ghirahim, Ridley and King K Rool were rumored since before any other characters were announced. There was nothing nearly as official as Gematsu, but they're beyond speculation. Gardevoir is just speculation, but I don't think it's that big of a deal to include her. I'm not claiming any accuracy for them, just stating there's a possibility.

Few reasons.
1. Her pokeball hasn't been confirmed, which is strange considering she was one of the more unique ones in brawl.
2. She recently got a mega-evolution in pokemon XY.
3. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire remakes are coming out, and gardevoir being one of the most popular choices from RSE would be a good representative. They tend to use popular characters from new games as promo.
Thats about it. It probably won't happen, but it's fun to think about.
Rumor is Lucas willbe a skin for Ness, which is an awesome idea. If Female Robin, frame Little Mac, male Wii Fit Trainer, etc. can make it in as skins, I'm sure Lucas will, too.
He was easily among the best Brawl characters and much better than Ness
