I'm pretty sure they use condoms. Plus they're never total strangers. Sydney is huge but every social circle is linked, so it feels like a really small world. So even if they're only meeting a guy that night, they almost always know who he is because of mutual friends or facebook lurking, even though it's still a random hook-up.
edit: I know that doesn't make them immune to STIs, and everyone can contract them, but usually people who look clean are cleaner than people who look dirty. Even though that's a stupid stance to take on STIs. But still, they're safe. Although I think a couple have contracted chlamydia, but that's just like 2 pills and it's gone.
