I always thought "Same Love" sampled "People Get Ready," unless it was an "Adorn"/"Sexual Healing" situation where the inspiration was clearly there but was not enough to be considered a dominant sample.
As for "Thrift Shop," I remember something about it containing a minor sample of "Change The Beat" from an '80s hip hop group or something. I've always known about the Le1f situation.
I guess my point is, that his music wasn't a complete let-go of samples or too much of an original composition, but you are right that his album doesn't contain as many samples as a typical hip hop album.
