What I find annoying in the US is that, as a melting pot full of diversity, no one wants to share each others cultures for the beauty of it. Black culture is a significant part of American culture for example, so of course other races in the US will adopt some of the styles/mannerisms blacks have contributed onto our society. What I want to know is, when will we acknowledge one another as Americans first and foremost before we start labeling each other as "acting black" or "acting white" or whatever the case. It's gross. We should be able to embrace one another as Americans contributing ideas and trends without separating and limiting ourselves to our own race. It's just so bland.

I agree and most people do, but these are ideas of Utopian society. We can't stop talking about racism, not because we don't want to, but because it's still going on. Why should I stop talking about racism when I'm still experiencing it?
You live in one of the biggest most progressive cities in the United States, as do I. So I could imagine that we do not feel the same heat of racism that she feels living in Mississippi. That is something that should be considered as well.
It's still happening. As we move on in more progressive regions in the U.S. and racism becomes less apparent, there will always be places that need to catch up.

You're not getting it. Gay isn't something you wear on your skin.

You see white gays trying to act as black as they can but couldn't be bothered to actually talk to a black person but are happy to steal their culture to be more entertaining to their friends. It's like putting on black face and being a minstrel.
|
You can't "steal" culture If someones interested enough in a certain culture that they actually want to embrace it, that's a totally fine thing. Now theres a difference from embracing a culture and making fun of it to make it look dumb/stupid/bad. Hehe

But you can tell some people are gay. Or rather, other people may perceive someone as gay and target them.

To add, several people are loudly proclaiming that being gay is much "harder" than being black. While it's insane to start a pissing content over oppression, I will say this: as a gay white man, I can still choose to move and exist in any space I want. I never enter a grocery store wondering if I'm going to be followed through the aisles, or pass someone on a dark street and wonder if they think I'll mug them. I have never passed a police officer and felt like I had a target on my back. As far as I'm concerned, our (very real) struggles can never compare to literally wearing your oppression on your skin.

Wow, this is an extremely ignorant comment

I'm pretty sure Black women and women in general are currently taking gay lingo and using it. So what is the problem with a White Gay guy acting sassy?

|
Just read the article sis, if you haven't yet. It doesn't say anything bad about having sass, it's specifically targeting a particular racial stereotype.

This is just all so damn petty. Are the white gay males hurting the black females by adopting some of the things they do? It's apart of being in such a connected world, it's called cultural SYNCRETISM. That's why you see candidates on both sides doing what they see the other side doing. Just so I don't get attacked for being insensitive or misunderstanding: I'm a black gay male.

"You can hide being gay"
Yeah, you can say you're straight but the fact of the matter is if you have feminine mannerisms that you can't control, you're going to be treated gay regardless.

There won't ever be an end to discrimination in this country because of the way that this country was founded. Blacks and other minorities didn't really have a hand in creating the laws / rules of this country so everything is written from a white male perspective and because of that White hetero males are seen as the "invisible norm" and everything else is seen as deviant. In order for things to change everything would probably have to be redone. I mean look at the senate is it really representative of the people that inhabit this country when its mostly comprised of white males ? How can a white male feel like they can address Black issues ? Female Issues ? Everyone should be equally represented the personal is political etc

Its difficult when someone is denied basic rights for being gay but its even more difficult when someone is denied basic rights at one institution for being gay another for being black and another for being a woman.
|
That's the biggest problem though, the panning.
People saying that issue A, B, or C, doesn't exist or should be ignored, just because they aren't
experiencing it.

The racism in this way of thinking is inherent. We live in a society where it's okay for black people to act white and not for white people to act black. It shouldn't be about "acting", we're all people - we're all allowed to act however we want. Saying similar things is NOT cultural appropriation, you cannot trademark slang. Is it cultural appropriation if I start speaking Spanish tomorrow? Tell this bitch to take several seats, she is just trying to seem intellectual and she is failing hard.

I'm staying out of this and not generalize but for myself if I want to as sexual as I feel like it behind closed doors, ride a **** to Partition on my own private time, not say or if you want to call it "shade" whatever I have in mind and have a career that I worked for (it wasn't just handed to me) and keep on being "privileged" for circumstances I can't control, I'll keep on doing just that. What am I supposed to do, give up my job, not say what I have in mind and be a meek tool?

Sierra needs to stop trying to police other people's lives & identities, then maybe people will start to care about her opinion.
