Charli XCX Covers Billboard Magazine

2014's IT girl. Whats the first thing that comes to mind when you hear this line? Charli XCX. The 21 years old British Alternative-Goth-Pop star has taken the world by storm slowly at first and with a bang in 2014. 'Alone in the Dark' is the new jam of many people already, only two days after it's release. The song has also been topping the ITunes charts of many countries and has been sitting at number 1 on the US's ITunes store as well.
"It's amazing how things change so fast in this industry" said Miss XCX. "In 2011, I was a Nobody, In 2013 I've released my debut album and in 2014 I've been on TV shows, and big stages already." she continued. "Labels usually forces their artists to release soem trash songs to be more and more exposed to the public. That's not what I'm doing ad I'll never be doing anything anyone would enforce on me. I try to have my own path in life, which is what I think some people find interesting in me. I don't adapt to what people need to be to be successful, the people need to adapt to my own style."
That's an interesting way to see things. Charli XCX did seduce us with her out of this world shows and amazing music. 'True Romance' was a masterpiece and it's what her second album is shaping up to be. Another musical masterpiece.
Before we sat down for the interview, Charli played for us a few demos of some songs on the album. She didn't reveal the song titles though and she asked us not to reveal too much about them. The one thing we can say about them is that they are amazing tracks, jsut like 'Alone in the Dark' or 'SuperLove' which are both on the album as confirmed by Charli.
You have a really unique musical style, how did you, basically 'came up with it'?
Well I don't really come up with style really, I just write down whatever I find catchy or nice and I start singing it in different melodies. I try to find the best that way. It's really simple.
Do you think you'll ever write a 'I Love It' 2.0 and keep it for yourself?
No not really, I just prefer doing new songs. I love it was great but it's really not that much my style either even though it does have similarities.
You have written a lot of songs for more performers already, Zendaya used one of your old demos, Taylor Swift wrote a song with you and there are rumors you are working with Marina & the Diamonds, do you like keeping on writing for other rather then yourself?
I like to write for myself, I'll always do that, but I don't have any problem with writing for other people as well.
Who's your favorite between those people you've worked with?
I don't really choose favorites, all were really great to work with. Zendaya was really nice when I met her, I didn't think someone like that would actually find my demo, but she did great use with it. I've heard a small snippet of the new version of 'Cuts Like Diamonds', Zendaya sounds perfect on it and the new instrumental is amazing. The same goes for working with Taylor and Marina. All of them are great.
Who are you listening to right now?
Well Britney Spears. Always Britney. But we were just talking about Zendaya & Taylor Swift, and I jam to their collaboration on daily basis.
Do you have anyone you'd like to work with?
Again, Britney. I just love her so much *laughs*.
You have a great fashion sense as well, You always wear some clothes that are noticeable, the boots alone are enough to know you're here! You always look like a emo girl at a rave, What's your current fashion obsession?
Besides from The Blondes for who I modeled I really love this label 'Lazy oaf' which has some crazy and great fashion. Top shop has some cute outfits as well. Also Roberto Piqueras will always have some great things to buy as well.
Charli XCX then gave us some free tickets to her show at Glassland (which was an amazing show, the girl knows how to throw some perfect parties!) ad bought us Ice cream on the way to the studio we rented for the photoshoot of the cover. The pictures can be viewed in our gallery and are featured inside the magazine. The behind-the-scenes video of the photoshoot can also be watched on our Youtube channel.
