Well she would have never become a worldwide star if she hadn't made music in English. That was what propelled her to new levels of success, and what has ultimately become her undoing if this era is any indication: the need to cater to two very distinct audiences (not just in music taste but in language). An artist like Beyonce has it easier because while she has to cater to pop and urban, all the music is still in English so it's a lot easier for it to cross over...but how many Americans and Brits are going to listen to music in a language they can't understand?. Shakira has to make two separate albums or make a bilingual one and risk alienating one half

And then her four year breaks don't help either. Shakira ended up alienating her English speaking audience by trying too hard to appeal to them and removing what made her unique, her quirkiness and her Latin influences (She Wolf, this current album), which also alienated the Spanish speaking audience. A mess in general.
