Discussion: Is "Writing" Your Own Songs Tragically Overrated?

its a talent, the same way that singing is a talent. is vocal skill overrated?
personally, artists that write their own lyrics are usually my favorites. they can inject personal details and their own personality into their music. it gives me more to connect with when im listening to the songs.
theres nothing really wrong with not writing your own songs, but it is a talent that some people have and others dont.

No. Even of the lyrics are bad, it at least makes the song seem more authentic and relatable if you know its from the singers' actual perspective.

It's not wrong to not write your songs. Songwriting is a talent equal to singing and dancing. Singers who don't write are just singers, with the avenue of expressing their artistry through the voice. Songwriters express through their lyrics.
There is no double standards. The reason why many criticise some current artists for not being able to write is either because they tout themselves as a writer or they lack the ability to sing or dance, making them basically a puppet, not an artist at all. No one criticise Whitney for not writing her songs.

It is so a double standard because people do get shaded for not writing their own songs, some of whom have stans in this thread. Lots of music fans see songwriting as an integral part of being a singer and some singers feel the exact same eg mariah. There is definitely a culture where the singers who don't write their own songs get labelled as an industry puppet or manufactured brand, whereas in actors it's clearly not the case. The same with classical musicians.

I'm sorry but your response is so
There's GOOD songwriting and BAD songwriting. Just because you write songs, it doesn't mean you're good at it.

Song writing isn't the be all end all. For example, Carrie Underwood wrote over 100 songs for the Blown Away era. But why would she turn down "Blown Away" for a song she wrote that's weaker lyrically? Nobody's going to say "Wow I like this album more because she chose to only take songs she wrote" they're going to think she was a ****ing idiot for turning down Blown Away.

I mean when you write songs well they sound good.
If you write your own lyrics that sound stupid then its because you're stupid...just like an essay or poetry.

Writing them well is a sign of talent (for example, Britney Spears wrote Everytime which is amazing)
Now that said, just writing a song doesn't mean your talented. Anyone can write a sucky song. Writing a good song is what's impressive. And I'm sure everyone has a few duds here and there, so I go by overall song quality

No, it's not overrated. It's a gift if you can do it well. Remember that writing includes the melody too, not just the lyrics.

Songwriting is respected by the gp as much as atrl, and this is coming from a Britney/Rihanna fan

I knew this was made by a Rihanna fan.
And no, it's not overrated. Of course there are bad songwriters, for example, Rebecca Black didn't write Friday.

No. But with some artists, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Not at all overrated. It is rated highly, which is where it belongs. Odds are, if all your songs are being handed to you pre-written by men in suits sitting in a conference room, they will be terrible, impersonal, and you as an artist will not be able to connect with them, and an artist's emotional connection to the material they are performing is what REALLY makes things pop.
I don't pay attention to the ladies in my sig, so I don't know how much, if any, they write, but if I was to be informed that any of them had a heavy hand in writing all of their songs, I would begrudgingly give them a few respect points and hate them a bit less.
A little bit of songwriting goes a long way toward being a credible artist. Even if your lyrics are cheesy at times, at least you wrote them.
I have much disdain for anyone I see in this thread saying writing doesn't mean anything. Like what kind of sad human being thinks that?

I'd like to point out regarding Nicki that people write good songs and people write bad songs, if someone's written several really good songs in their past, you shouldn't judge them for having a few duds.
Or should I judge Mariah's songwriting ability based solely on Touch My Body?
