Why would Iggy choose to exploit black culture if she knew that black people would never take her seriously? She didn't exploit black culture in order to become successful. If she was just doing it for success, she would have been trying to sing pop songs instead of rap. "Black culture" is her culture, that's what she's assimilated to because of her upbringing and life.
!
No offense, but some of you on ATRL have a very outdated and kind of racist view of culture.

Because it's an easy way to stand out and get noticed. White girl rapping? In a Southern accent like Gangsta Boo? How often do you come across that?
And she grew up in Australia. She is Australian. Black culture where?
The Bounce video? Sure. Nobody is ever going to be able to convince you that it was done respectfully because you're set on being offended by it. It's a moot point.
it was clearly in a jokingly way tho.
Iggy isnt a racist she literally left Austalia to live with her BLACK BESTFRIEND
do u get mad when rappers say white boy wasted ?? ur thinking too deep into it
The Bounce video was filmed with an entirely Indian production crew in India and a bollywood director on set to guide the narrative.
But let me guess, you're willing to ignore the work of people who are actually in that culture because you're physically incapable of seeing anything other than a white woman. You can't even fathom that someone of another culture would enjoy collaborating with someone from a different culture.

"I'm not racist, my best friend is black" teas. Literally.

That's ridiculous. As if she doesn't really like or respect rap music, she's just doing it because people wouldn't expect her to and it would get her attention. You obviously don't know anything about her backstory if you're trying to say that. She listened to rap music and she was lower class in Australia, when she moved to Miami at age 16, she was immersed in black culture for real.
It's not as if she grew up listening to Kylie Minogue and ABBA and then started rapping when she was looking for attention. Rap music has been her whole life.

There's been at least 10 girls who have tried to do that and haven't been able to make a name
She moved to the U.S.at 16 and spent her time in Miami, Houston, and Atlanta. She was mentored by the Dungeon Family and then T.I.
The fact that you can't fathom someone moving between cultures or experiencing and participating in cultures that are foreign to them is kind of disturbing.
The entire thought process of "cultural appropriation" is this:
1) Assign a racial category to an artist
2) assign a racial category to an action
3) check the artist and action for proper racial alignment.
It makes you sound like a damn Klansmen, trying to keep races pure. Give it up. Its not progressive. Its retrograde and pathetic and is certainly not relevant in the internet age.

Yall are so closed-minded & ignorant. dont act like you've never made a stereotypical joke. yall are the type of people who need to stay in the 50's. Keep your black vs white up, and warch how far you'll get in 2014- present times
i can pull up various tweets or quotes from Nicki,Rih, etc saying similar things

You don't even need a tweet. "Sweeter than your rice cake" anyone?

Your view of culture is outdated.
No, my view of culture is fine thank you very much.
And her dressing up and embracing the culture is fine, but the mere fact she has gone around mocking and making jokes about the very people whose culture she is 'enjoying', only to adopt their look so she has a nice video is unsettling to me. At the end of the day the video was used as promotion, to help get her name and the song out here, and she did it by deriving from those she laughed at. Those Asian tweets are disrespectful and if you cannot see that then sorry.

Lumping all Asian cultures together as one mass is not helping your case. In fact, it makes your understanding of culture seem even less realized.

OMG they say that?!

There was no stereotyping in that tweet though, she wasn't making fun of the woman's culture. She was making fun of the woman. The only person it attacks or makes fun of is the woman who was in her seat.
This thread is still going on? Mess.
Are people still fishing for bullet points or....
FYI, she has 3 songs in the Urban Top 50 and No Mediocre is the Greastest Gainer and will probs go #1.
WE blacks don't have a problem with her, this is not a Macklemore situation.
