But sis you missed my whole point, was Iggy a joke when she releasing mixtapes, or when work was only charting under bubbling under? or was she a joke when she got a #1 from a pop song and was anointed the new queen of rap from the white media? I was lowkey stanning for her back when fancy first was rising on the charts and nobody really cared, it was when the forbes article hit when the backlash started tbh
From the moment she opened ha mouth on her very first song (idk which song that is???) and out came a faux 'Southern' accent is the moment she was a joke. I mean your statement alone -- "anointed new queen of rap from the white media"...doesn't that contradict your generalization about the black community 'using' her? Is she not a queen of the 'black' media and community like you previously stated?
And good for you for stanning her before she blew up. Such an achievement!
There's this thing in the black community called Light Skin vs. Dark Skin and it's pretty much a product of Willie Lynch and American slave culture. Light skin was a positive, Dark skin a negative. And lighter skin did grant you privileges above the darker slaves. Colorism is a ugly thing modern black american's are subjected to and entertain themselves with. And they're as lost as the person appropriating our culture. Its very much this point: 5. “Black people should be flattered that someone’s singing and appreciates their music.” running subconsciously within their head.
Have you heard of the Black Doll vs White Doll test?
And unfortunately the conclusions of the colorism test will always be ingrained in our subconscious.
Light will always be better than Dark. White, will always be purer than black. It will always be considered "Good", and Black will always be considered to be bad.
People need to just let someone be successful without trying so hard to bring them down. I'm 99% sure if Iggy wasn't white no one would be saying all this crap about her even under the same circumstances (uses different accent for rapping, etc.)
Iggy doesn't dress like most black people in America do, her music videos aren't filled with black people, so how in the world is she appropriating a culture? Simply for rapping in another accept to be more appealing?
I don't stan for her (only a few songs), but I hope she has more success in the future to keep these haters pressed.
One of the many discussions is that Iggy more than likely wouldn't have found success with Fancy had she been black and, if she had, there's a big chance she wouldn't have gone #1. But, obviously, we'll never know.
Cultural appropriation goes beyond how you dress and your appearance lol.
Exactly. To be more appealing. So she's using another culture to her advantage; in this case to gain more appeal? In addition to the receipts of her harboring racist attitudes...is that not fishy to people?

Why? Why can't we question someone's talent, credibility and the deservedness of their success in a mature way? It's how we have interesting discussions on here. This is clearly a really thought-provoking topic. It beats "which song is better, x or y?" threads.

How do most black people in America even dress though?
This is kinda dumb.
And you answered your own question in the last sentence, fyi.

+1
I love threads like these because I can see people actually try to have a good discussion about a topic, regardless of how I feel about it. It opens my eyes to things I might not have seen or thought of before thus possibly changing how I feel about things. It's really good for the forum too tbh. The issue is mainly people come into these threads with **** like "WOW RACE ISN'T A PROBLEM ANYMORE" and "Y'ALL ARE SO STUPID SHUT UP" and other idiotic replies when people are actually having good ass debates over ****.
As if being white helped her in this genre. Artists like Kreayshawn and Iggy were laughed and mocked when they debuted, for being a white woman trying to rap. It certainly didn't facilitate her career at all. Azealia Banks managed to have one of the biggest hits of the year with 212 in the UK, race had nothing to do with that. This is only an issue for places like ATRL and bloggers, people in the real world are really not that bothered by Iggy's race.
You clearly don't have any experience with hip-hop, or the issue at hand.

I've already wrote paragraphs on this in this thread, but basically, Iggy did not initially become successful in "this genre", if you're referring to hip hop. She was struggling until mainstream (aka white people) put her on and made Fancy a huge pop hit. It wasn't until Fancy smashed Top 40, that it even began making an urban dent.
Toting Iggy's recent surge in success as something that happened despite her race is just incorrect.

I think Iggy's "blaccent" has always been what annoys me the most. She sounds like a complete caricature (and a rude one at that, because her voice is so annoying). Maybe it's not really my place to say, but I feel like if I were black, her "rapping" would sound demeaning. Her fake voice is literally reductive--it reduces black women to whatever Iggy thinks they should sound like. It's pretty much a fact that black people are immediately judged/discriminated against based on how "black" vs. "white" they speak, but when Iggy adopts her fake voice, she's suddenly cool for it.

Just like Macklemore can't claim he overcame race in order to reach success. Not when I heard about Thrift Shop from the white girls on Tumblr!
And if you really wanna take it there, you could point out that Macklemore first got noticed when Same Love made a stir online--I heard it months before Thrift Shop ever smashed. Then when Thrift Shop was released, the very first stations to play it were liberal college radio stations. He didn't break through on regular urban support, but he did based on his "omg LGBT-friendly rapper!!!" hype (because, you know, obviously all the other rappers [read: black rappers] are homophobic )
With Iggy, she couldn't break through on urban radio not because she is white, but because she's not that great of a rapper. She's not overcoming racial boundaries or anything grand like that. She's enlisting B-list pop singers to make catchy choruses to help bring her particular brand of rapping to white audiences.
In my opinion she just sounds bad though. Like forget all this talk about accents for a second and ask, does she naturally have a voice that sounds good. Because I don't thinks she does. Even if her accent was better and was just a standard American accent, I don't think she'd sound good because she just doesn't have a good voice.
Like this performance...I swear if it were ANY of our faves they would get absolutely slaughtered. To me it just seems like rap karaoke

I hate the mentality that "You wouldn't be popular if you weren't pretty and white," however when a Black person makes it in a market different from urban "Good for you! You fought the power and rose against the bias against your race!"
If Iggy is appropriating a culture just for rapping in an "black" accent to be appealing to Americans, then what about Nicki? Her voice when rapping and her voice when singing do not sound the same, yet no one ever accuses her of appropriating white culture to be appealing to mainstream masses.
Compare her "rapping" in Starships to her rapping in Lookin Ass ***** and tell me she isn't purposely making it sound different to be more appealing I literally just do not get why the urban community are willing to see the faults in everyone but black people. Point fingers at Iggy, but Nicki is a legitimate artist who doesn't appropriate either? Ok

Right. Everything doesn't have to be looked at with simple-minded ATRL stan goggles. No one is in here dragging Iggy. I personally love Iggy and her music. People are simply having a good discussion about a topic that's relevant to society and music.
