I somewhat agree with Damien. The blacks have been slacking, but there are always cases to dispute this, Frank Ocean got put on solely due to the buzz he was creating in the urban community as the "progressive R&B" leader.
Now if the blacks get it right, Zendaya her career will mirror that of MJ.

What about John Legend then? All of Me is the second most streamed song this year. The only reason Urban music is declining is because the music is deteriorating so no one wants to listen to it anymore. Make good songs and people will start listening to urban radio more and pop radio would embrace it.
Majority of America, besides young teenagers and the urban community, does not want to hear the same lyrics with a different beat (that aren't even good to begin with). If people can stop rapping about hoes, money, chains, weed, etc. people would take more interest.
Let me not even get into the trend of autotuning rap songs
