Girl, 1986 is during the True Blue era. One of Madonna her biggest eras, that had 3 #1 hits.

Janet and Control during the same time period had only one #1 hit from that album. And a song that didn't even make the top-20 (TPP) IIRC.

True Blue had 3 #1 hits and 2 other top 5 hits. A mess.

Tbh black artists always have edges over white artists in US if they get Mainstream, not a racial thing or anything.

It's just they always get Urban (unless you're Jason Derulo) + Mainstream. The crossover effect will always win.

It's why black music dominated the 00's here, and Pharrell and John are snatching every record. It's also why Rihanna will be more remembered than Katy Perry.
