In a way. It's great if an artist can write their own songs, but I honestly don't care who wrote the song as long as I find it good

Even though R+J and The Scarlet Letter have no immediate literary connection, Taylor's bringing the situations of both together, to relate to her situation. R+J for their forbidden love, and TSL to reinforce their defiance It'd pretty good, imo

Reading way too much into a misplaced metaphor and pretending it makes perfect sense when it's just not a good metaphor. Just deal sis. Like you said, she was 17. Alluding to committing adultery.

It's laughable that you're using those examples, why don't you use some of their actual song writing samples? Are you afraid you might clock yourself?
And only someone whose fave is not able to write properly would make such a thread, now that we're at it.

Might only be my personal taste here, but a song written only by one artist will always be more special to the fans and the artist than a song written by 8 people and produced by 6.

When it comes too a song being special to me, I feel like it doesn't matter who wrote the song as long as the actual lyrics connect to me.

You're not getting it By committing adultery, Hester was going against the 17th century society, just like Taylor and her boyfriend are going against their parents thus defiance

The funniest part is, I'm not even the one clocking these lyrics, I pulled all of the OP examples from this article

So I'm a bit lost as to why everyone is in here fuming at me when publications have already shaded your fave

i think you're the one that needs to deal Taylor's (and the other's you've mentioned in the OP) a good songwriter, just let the light in, accept it, and move on

A made a post a few pages back about this; a songwriter isn't always perfect and very mature. Some lyrics are added just to fit the song or to make a song enjoyable on the radio, but that doesn't exclude all the other well written songs. We're not talking about being a perfect songwriter here.

Maybe because your title is implying all personal songwriting is tragically overrated instead of just the ones that truly deserve the finger-pointing. Truly, I'm holding back everything I REALLY want to say to you because I write my own songs. So you've been insulting me and a handful of singer-songwriters for the past 7 pages, but I'm not going to punch back because your title doesn't equate what your OP mentions.
So, to answer your question, it is not "tragically overrated", but we shouldn't assume that all singer-songwriters are above the rest; they're artists just like the others with one of their talents being "writing their own songs"!

Girl, obviously I'm not saying everyone who writes a song is untalented. The songs getting praise for being "written" by some of these mainstream artists just happen to have terrible lyrics which is my point. Anyone can write a bad song, and doing so doesn't make you talented.

It's only overrated when the lyrics you're serving up are trash. You're here to make good music and if you can't write songs then don't force your crappy lyrics on the world. Good music is a package of different component and lyrics are big a part of that; you don't get a gold star just because you decided to publish evidence of your own lack of talent as a writer. Can't write? Get a writer who knows what they're doing.
However if you're a genuinely good songwriter-musician like Dolly Parton or Bruce Springsteen or Billy Joel, then it's not overrated at all.
