Personally, I try to give the thread a chance to live. For example, if there are just 1-2 comments...I don't think it's enough to close the thread.
But it got to the point where it was pretty much arguing, fighting, flamebait in 90% of the posts from a few zealots. The thread had no chance of continuing without heavy moderation.
In the past, I would leave it open and just comb page by page and continue to moderate the mess. However, I don't have time for that anymore and it is generally unappreciated anyway.
