Del Rey braves huge and often absurd gestures, but my God, does she sound like she means them. The chorus of “Money Power Glory” arcs with her most triumphant melody yet, while “Shades of Cool” and “West Coast” shiver with heartbroken soprano. She’s never sung like this before. The characters and artifacts that surround these songs feel artificial, like stock props, but the music that Del Rey pulls them through splits them open, shakes them to life. She walks that tough line of high melodrama, demanding emotional investment in stories that nakedly display their own falseness. The way she sings, you start to guess that there’s real love somewhere inside all that gloss.

Interesting, I found she sang with just as much emotion on BTD (MDM, Video Games, Ride). She doesn't sound any more/less fake on UV. I feel like critics/media knows they got it completely wrong when she debuted and are trying to make up for it now

Yeah, she's just riding off the success of her last album. This album won't have as much longevity as BTD without a hit. BTD was a word-of-mouth type of thing.

And I haven't seen such statements in SYG - obviously the album isn't as commercial as BTD was, but it's better.

If Adele does a surprise release, I feel like her debut week sales in the US would be lower than Beyonce's. It's not that people aren't here for her music, but she doesn't have a fanbase that's super thirsty for new material or young enough to spread the news through social media. Like... idk. Does anyone else feel this way?
