I'm halfway through Ultraviolence and I just don't get it. Everything she does is so melodramatic and heavy handed and it all sounds like a 16 year old's diary but not in the magical Taylor Swift way.
Don't listen to the lyrics; listen to the production on the first half.
I would say he does understand the artist. He understands that she's a vapid shell of a music artist who offers little to nothing of interest to the metaphorical musical table.
He understands that the forced emotions on every track are kind of flaky and tacked on, that in fact most of these tracks lack REAL emotion.
He understands that her songs and the presentation of songs all follow a fairly similar feel across the board. This on a singular basis is tolerable but after that fact become tedious and aggravating.
So in conclusion, just because he doesn't buy into the painted portrayal of Miss Del Rey doesn't mean he doesn't understand her, simply that he doesn't buy it and doesn't think the album is any good.
I am a massive Black Keys fan, but I don't winge that he didn't understand the artist, rather understand that he didn't dig it. Not liking an album isn't a criminal offence.
I actually don't think they're that bad. Like I don't watch him a lot but it seems like he's less pretentious than a lot of reviewers and often admits that he's just voicing his opinions.
And the production....while not bad isn't very good. 
is this why the UV score went from 81 to 71?
