I would say that, in general, Madonna's ballads are better (as a whole). Songs like This Used to Be My Playground, Rain, Paradise (Not For Me), Oh Father, I'll Remember, To Have and Not to Hold, Gone, Take a Bow, and many more are seriously beautiful and well written.
Mariah however has three of my favourite ballads: Can't Let Go, Vanishing, and My All.

I love both very much, but Madonna! Mariah's ballads are almost always boring and faceless and emotionless. I get a sense of genuine feeling from Madonna's ballads. They sound like they are coming an authentic hurt place. I think Mariah shows her emotions and feelings so much better in her mid-tempos and high-tempo songs. Like, "My All"???? Hellooooo
