BSB had many AC songs that older people liked, and songs like Everybody were "cool", it wasn't embarrassing to be a guy and enjoy them.
And Kevin was already 25 or something when they debuted (and Nick was 15), their fans reflected those age differences.
One Direction is more of a niche act, the craze takes place outside of the general mainstream. If you're an adult without a young daughter then chances are you don't know anything about them.
