It's 100000x better. It's an improved version of the original, made by the original creator. Sims 3 was Mr. Rod Humble deciding to turn the series into a more goal/RPG-based game but failing. He decided us Simmers weren't playing right and he was there to fix that. Then the store started selling broken content for the same price as expansions and the whole thing became a broken cash cow mess.
I could write a book on why Sims 2 is a good game, but it's best to download it and experience for yourself.
