Plus Tom Cruise is (was) a massive sex symbol and box office draw and the Oscars hate to reward people who have everything.

That's kind of true, but also unfair, seeing as there are a lot of actors (and actresses -- Anne Hathaway) who won the Academy Award, even though they just play themselves. Has Matthew McConaughey ever not played some guy from The South with a thick accent? Has Denzel Washington ever not played Denzel Washingston? Hell, has Kevin Spacey ever not played Kevin Spacey? I don't really have a problem with actors playing themselves, as long as they are interesting people.
Seth Rogan playing himself is always fun and interesting because he's a fun and interesting personality. Tom Cruise playing himself is always good, because he's a great dramatic actor. Anne Hathaway always playing herself is obnoxious because she's an obnoxious personality (shout out to Gwyneth Paltrow).
