It's interesting how, even though we're all on this forum, that MUSIC is the sole artistic medium that is facing a steep depression in both sales and quality.
Films are breaking box office records left and right and the 'blockbuster' is becoming good again (Cap Am 2 being the perfect example).
More people are binge watching TV shows and the critically the content is at an all-time high.
Broadway is breaking box office records and Hedwig is one of the best broadway shows in years.
Video games are also breaking sales records and are becoming increasingly deep.
I'd say the only other mediums that are suffering a bit right now are literature and visual arts.
Just an interesting observation.

Good thing ART (the trinity: Adele, Rihanna, Taylor) are coming back to save the music industry again with their album sells (well, two of them) and hits! And Adele, and Taylor to a lessor extent (if She does it right this time), can remind the people that mainstream music can be good.
And, I mean, 2013-14 haven't been completely devoid of acclaimed albums that are also well known. Beyoncé and Lorde were acclaimed and sold well, Kacey Musgraves was acclaimed and was frequently recognized by the country industry despite its low sales and lack of airplay. But yeah, overall, I agree with you.
