It's more to do with the intent of their words, rather than using a racial slur alone, which might be insensitive, but not necessarily racist at all depending on the context.

The problem is this word has trickled into popular culture, shockingly, and so people (younger generations especially) are desensitised to the gravity of its history.

Do you know black people are most likely to be arrested, more likely to be perceived as a thug, and less likely to find better housing.
Black people are less likely to make news headlines when they're missing or something, black people are more likely to rejected for a job due to their race, and are more likely to get rejected into collage.
But when it comes to saying the word ******, white people complain why they can't say it
